Admitting Mistakes: Even presidents need to learn from experience
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 05:05 AM by aquart
Bush is in BIG trouble. This is from the Dallas Morning News:

You may forgive President Bush if he's wondering whether he was in a press conference Tuesday night or a confessional. One after another, reporters asked him whether he had made any mistakes on his watch.

-snip-

Still, the president and strategists like Karl Rove shouldn't dismiss the questioning as an irritant. Like all of us, presidents improve only when they acknowledge they could have done something better.

-snip-

We aren't saying Mr. Bush has made a similar mistake in the war against terrorism. We support many of his moves.

But no White House should get to the point where it can't admit mistakes. Perhaps presidents don't confess them publicly during a campaign. But, heavens, at least acknowledge them behind closed doors – for the good of the country. Lyndon Johnson became so obsessed with his Vietnam course that he couldn't entertain another vision. The nation can't afford that kind of stubbornness again.

1. Isn't Shrub being sued by some 9/11 families?
I thought I had read that a while ago. That would make it impossible for them to admit to responsibility or mistakes. A trial on these issues would certainly be interesting.

2. but it's possible to admit mistakes w/o, well, admitting mistakes
you can always say, "if only we had known, then we might have done x, y, or z." this still lets you claim that you did nothing wrong based on what you actually did know at the time. that at least would help.
