The White Stuff
The White Stuff
by Ed Naha | June 2, 2009

At what point, in America, did it become okay to be stupid? When did it become acceptable for someone to blurt out any inane mental fart at Led Zeppelin volume and, then, smirk smugly as if they'd just revealed the secret of life?

Here's conservative icon and convicted felon G. Gordon Liddy on the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. "Let's hope that the key conferences aren't when she's menstruating or something, or just before she's going to menstruate. That would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then."

Well, we pretty much know we wouldn't get anything that would result in jail time, Gordo.

If the cartoonish kafuffle being spewed by the right over Sotomayor's life is any indication, many conservatives have traded in the American Eagle for a rubber chicken. Once more, they're damned proud of the swap!

By now, we've all heard the "damning" quote from Sotomayor circa 2001 wherein she opined: "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

The comment, taken out of context from the rest of her speech, has really cheesed off, uh, mostly white males in the right wing although white female automatons are also grinding their gears. For anyone who thinks a pie fight the equivalent of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, the resulting rhetoric has been intellectually stimulating.

Before going any further, I should confess that I don't believe the Republican Party has put ordinary people before power and patronage in over fifty years. The political inroads they have made since Eisenhower have been based mostly on appealing to greed, fear and latent racism. A new Gallup poll found that 89 per cent of the GOP is white, with 63 per cent identifying themselves as conservative. So, it comes as no surprise to me that reaction to a middle-aged Hispanic woman judge being primed for the Supreme Court has resulted in a Michelin Guide To Facial Tics.

You know Republicans are grasping at straws when they call a Latino woman a racist.
