Editorial: Bush's disconnect / What the president said and what is reality

It was useful for President Bush to have held a televised, prime-time press conference Tuesday night. America's faith in the competence of his leadership is currently being shaken both by the rising level of hostilities in Iraq and by the information emerging from the hearings of the Sept. 11 commission.

President Bush's statement of his intentions with respect to the difficult situation in Iraq served to inform Americans, international leaders and the Iraqis themselves of where the United States stands at this point. The troubling part of his presentation, however, was the obvious disconnect between some of what he was saying and the reality on the ground in Iraq.

5. So when is somebody with great credentials in treating mental illness
gonna come out and write "take the key and lock him up; he is insane"?

Surely, there are professionals in mental health care who are true patriots also.

9. I was on TV
and said that I could detect clear signs of brain pathology in President Reagan during the middle of his second term.

I do not find George insane but rather he is arrested in development.
He is approximately the emotional age of 17.

11. How dare you?
That is an insult to all 17-year-olds! My son just turned 17, and he would not want his mental development disparaged as being as low as Dubya's.

12. Possibly, you are selling 17 year olds short?

I'll buy arrested development, but I know a lot teens who show more responsibility and comprehension than bush* does. And at 18, many are up front and personally dealing with the consequences of his failings.

Hell, I know a bunch of 4 year old who are more responsible than he is. That, at least, is something which makes me hopeful about our future.

What do you make of the bit about not letting his feet touch dirt? How does he 'clear brush'?

edited due to seriously arrested typing skills

10. "does he know something that the public doesn't on Iraq that makes him ...
more confident about the situation than current developments would suggest?"

Uh, he knows that God is on his side and will send thunderbolts to smite his enemies? By Zeus, that might be it!

13. Excellent article
What a shame that most Imperial Subjects of Amerika get their information droolingly from Corporate TV Pravda.

16. This level of sophisticated discourse is unusual
on the DU, QWERTY555. You have distinguished yourself.

15. Your country is in trouble when
a post-presidential news conference Op/Ed piece expresses wonderment at "the apparent gap between what (Bush) said and what is reality." Generally speaking, presidential news conferences should not trigger debates over Platonic and Aristotelian concepts of reality.
