Neocons for Ahmadinejad
Neocons for Ahmadinejad

By Daniel Luban

At Wednesday’s Heritage Foundation conference on the Middle East peace process (which, as I wrote yesterday, was primarily devoted to pushing the almost-universally-scorned “three-state solution” for Israel-Palestine), Middle East Forum director Daniel Pipes made an unusually revealing comment while discussing Iran’s upcoming presidential elections.

“I’m sometimes asked who I would vote for if I were enfranchised in this election, and I think that, with due hesitance, I would vote for Ahmadinejad,” Pipes said. The reason, Pipes went on, is that he would “prefer to have an enemy who’s forthright and obvious, who wakes people up with his outlandish statements.” (Video of the event is available by following the link to the Heritage website; Pipes’s comments come at about the 1:29:00 mark.)

1. How about not having an enemy at all?
Oh yes, I forgot. That would go against the neocons' reason for living - the possibility of invading another country.

2. Wow. But it's a too-common attitude, not just about Iran
Indeed, I have seen almost the same identical words used by some people about why it would be supposedly better to have *Netanyahu* than Livni as PM of Israel.

Hawks on all sides need enemies! They are generally pretty good at creating enemies if they don't exist; but it's so much easier to have a real enemy. Except of course for all the victims of the conflicts.

3. Neocons are always for permanent cold war. Iran Regime Change
has been on their to-do list for since forever. As long as it's a regime change we get to implement from the outside- with the self-enrichment of trillions of dollars worth of weapons and contracts to keep our number one industry going here at home.
