According to the Associated Press, at least one donor to Sanford's 2006 gubernatorial campaign is drafting a letter asking that their donation be returned.
GOP criticism of the governor appears to focus on the hypocrisy of the governor's actions in light of past statements from Sanford about family values.
One of the most disturbing aspects of Governor Sanford's disappearance last week and subsequent revelations about spending a week in Argentina with his mistress is that no one was in charge of governing the state of South Carolina during the period in which the governor left the country without telling anyone where he was or how he could be reached.
That conservative critics of the governor have called for his resignation because of his illicit affair parallels the general state of the Republican party today. Republicans seem to be at a loss when it comes to the business of governance. The priority of any elected official is to serve the public.
The governor failed the state of South Carolina by leaving it without a leader. It matters less that he left the state unattended to fly to Argentina to be with his lover than it does that he left the state without telling anyone where he was or how he could be reached.
Leaving the state without a leader was irresponsible. As the governor of a state, Sanford's first priority should be to its citizens. He failed in his job as governor, and for that, he should resign.
