Dance Theatre may bow out in fiscal crisis Lacking endowment, Harlem troupe faces deficit of $3 million; asks city for help By Miriam Kreinin Souccar Published on April 19, 2004
Right now, Dance Theatre of Harlem is receiving raves on a tour across Europe. But when the world-renowned dance troupe comes home at the end of May, it may have completed its last pas de deux.
The 35-year-old company has been forced to cut its budget in half to around $5 million. It has spent its entire $2 million endowment and is facing a deficit of around $3 million for this fiscal year, ending June 30, according to sources close to the nonprofit.
In February, Dance Theatre laid off its last 11 employees, including the director of finance, the director of the dance school and the general manager. The board of directors has dwindled to four outside members from 17.
Volunteers keep it afloat
Reginald Van Lee, the dance company's chairman and a senior vice president at Booz Allen Hamilton Inc., resigned last fall. The company is currently being staffed by a few former employees working as volunteers.
