For God's sake (influence of Christian right will only increase if * reele
The strong influence of the Christian right on US policy will only increase if George Bush wins a second term, says Philip James

Evangelical lobbyists used to talk about access to previous Republican administrations. Today, they can say with confidence: "Who needs access when we are already on the inside?"

The influence of the Christian right on the Bush White House is self-evident. As well as George Bush, cabinet members Condoleezza Rice, John Ashcroft and Don Evans all consider themselves to be born again.

This administration has embarked on a bold agenda to roll back liberalism in the US, and won't let up if it gets a second term.

The September 11 attacks, Afghanistan and Iraq have overshadowed Bush's conservative domestic agenda, but it should not go overlooked by voters as we approach the November elections.

Bush's self-description as a compassionate conservative belies a much harsher reality. And as America's attention has been focused on historic events overseas, the ground at home has shifted just as dramatically.

1. These people aren't Christians, they're nuts!
That may be harsh. A lot of the followers are really just misled. Bush is the most amoral leader of modern times. I really don't think Jesus would consider Bush a hero.

4. Nuts, or very very frightened and easily preyed upon by fundi
ministers and by people like the Rove Bush Chaney propaganda machine.
These fanatics are turning me off to all religion by making it seem nothing but hypocrisy.

3. Pissed
Edited on Fri Apr-23-04 10:36 PM by jjs
Right now I'm especially pissed to be Catholic. Coming down on Kerry for being pro-choice while not even mentioning their opposition to the death penalty. The corruption stemming from faith based initiative funds and private school vouchers is just too transparent now.

5. There are many Catholics who feel like you! The Pope was against
this war before it started. That Bishop who is refusing to give Kerry communion is a hypocrit, because he is not speaking up about all those innocent civilians and American soldiers who are dead. He only cares about the unborn, not the already here and murdered or the child molestor priests who have destroyed the psyche of children.

6. You stinker! I wanted to post that link!
Scared me sh*tl*ss. Of course, go to au.org and read their blog and see how many times they use taxpayer funds, sneaking them by as some kind of allowable 'faith-based' initiative, to further their agenda. They are being very 'in-your-face' about their financial and political power.

7. The voucher movement is a big part of the problem...
Edited on Fri Apr-23-04 11:53 PM by keep_left
Here in Minneapolis, we have a really retrograde Catholic newspaper (the Catholic Spirit) that is controlled by the Archdiocese. A couple years ago, a political cartoonist for a major paper did a rather scathing bit about the "Amazing Vouch-O-Matic!", complete with the kind of sales pitch you hear most often on infomercials for bogus freeper health products. It was a purely political cartoon, and made no mention of the abuse scandals, etc. Immediately, the Spirit (and most of the other "Catholic" media around the nation) went on the warpath, accusing the cartoonist and like-minded individuals as bigots, anti-Catholic, etc. It's just total Stalinist-style rhetoric: "If you disagree with us, you're a bigot".

The hierarchy of the Church, which does NOT represent the vast majority of the rank and file, has chosen to get into bed with some of the most regressive, reactionary forces in politics today. They either cannot see or do not care that the people they are in cahoots with have total contempt for the social Gospel of Catholicism. This is the exact same thing you see in Latin America, with the same reactionary movements (Opus Dei, etc.). That's the kind of society we're becoming, thanks in large part to these people.

We'll be one step closer to a Theocracy if Bush gets reelected.
