Human rights activists call for missing Spaniard probe

Tuesday 04 August 2009

Human rights groups have urged the UN to investigate the case of a Spanish citizen who has not been heard from since he was seized by Pakistani security forces and handed over to US officials in October 2005.

The American Civil Liberties Union, Reprieve and Alkarama asked the UN special rapporteur on torture, the UN special rapporteur on the promotion of human rights and the UN working group on enforced or involuntary disappearances to raise the case of Mustafa Setmariam Nassar with the US and other governments that may have assisted the US in "disappearing" him.

In June 2009, in response to an ACLU request for information about Mr Nassar's whereabouts, the CIA stated that it could "neither confirm nor deny the existence or nonexistence of records" responsive to the request.

ACLU lawyer Steven Watt said: "Mr Nassar's family want to know if he is still alive and where he is.
