The conservative Christian's reaction to "Obama-Care."
http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-7556-Salt-Lake-City-Christian-Examiner~y2009m8d16-The-conservative-Christians-reaction-to-ObamaCare

From a distantly observant standpoint, it is a baffling concept that the majority of Christians are conservative Republicans. Perhaps the biggest liberal of all time was Jesus Christ Himself. To many, that must be a blasphemous concept to consider, but it's true. People these days have ceased pondering what the words liberal and conservative actually mean, and now simply associate them with baby-killing Democrats and insane evangelical Republicans. But the terms really aren't as bound to their stigmas as people would lead themselves to believe.

Now, there are many problems people have with what is being touted Obama-Care, but besides Sarah Palin inanely ranting on her Facebook and the legitimate concern of raised taxes and lower quality health care, one of the most resounding proclamations coming from conservative Christians has been: “I’m not paying for some welfare jerk’s hospital bill” or “if you want health care, then get a job!” Somehow, according to certain Christians, God picks and chooses which political confrontation He wants to weigh in on. With gay marriage, He was all over the place! Bible verse here, bible verse there, Rick Warren here, President Monson there, but He’s nowhere to be found on this one for some strange reason.

The Christian right hasn’t brought Him up once because there aren’t bible verses that support blatantly selfish catharsis. There are only verses that say we need to help the poor, love our neighbor and love our enemy and welcome the less fortunate with open arms. People were so quick to want to force their Christian values on people who didn’t necessarily share their beliefs, but none of them want to force those same values on themselves!

1. “You can safely assume
that you’ve created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.”

That's one of my favorite quotes . . .

3. Very good article. One commenter brought up something that has always
stuck in my craw, though, and that is the whole charity thing. Too often I have known Christians who feel there should be a charity for this and a charity for that instead of a government funded process. Aside from the concern of having taxes go to pay for something that upsets them (and who doesn't feel that way about one issue or another) this is mainly about the whole "sacrificing for God of my own free will" thing, and that having the money taken in taxes doesn't count because they didn't get a chance to sacrifice the money by their own choice.

But here's the thing. I don't think God as they understand him is really tallying up brownie points for each time they give. I think, too, that he understands that having the money come from their taxes still has the end result of caring for others. And nowhere does it say that you couldn't give to charity above and beyond whatever was taken from your taxes to care for others. And if there is still concern expressed as, "But the government took all my money and I have no more to give!" I would just remind them that Jesus understands if you don't have a lot to give. Really, he does.

Mark 12:41-44

The Widow's Offering
41Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins,worth only a fraction of a penny.

43Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on."

Ultimately, what matters more? Funding some care for some people through charitable giving, or funding more care for all people through taxes. Which one really matters more to God?

5. So called 'christians' who scream about paying for someone else's problems
don't know shit about the Bible....

The easy answer for this is to refer to
Matthew 25:31-46..

to cut to the chase, Jesus says:

I was hungry and you fed me;
I was thirsty, you gave me a drink;
I was a stranger, you welcomed me;
I was naked and you clothed me;
I was sick and you took care of me;
I was in jail and you visited me...

When did we do that?
When you did it for the least of my family,
you did it for me. Come into my kingdom...

And all you all that did nothing for others?
Well, you know the answer to that.

If that isn't a call to social justice,
what is?

But to many fundies, it's all about them..

7. And J.C. didn't put in any wiggle room conditions,
Like ...

"Teaching the poor bastard to fish rather than giving him a fish", or "Not enabling self-destructive behaviors", or my personal favorite, "the Lord helps those that help themselves."

8. It is not just the right wing Christians that are selective on brining God
into things. Like the right, GLBT neighbors require Bible waving and Rick Warren, but mention torture or vast fraud and theft, suddenly their faith is out of the picture, and the only concern is for politics. It gets tiresome, out of the President for example, hearing about how religious he is when he talks about his neighbor's civil rights, but hearing nothing but pragmatic concern for his own political hide when it comes to the truth about torture. For I was in prison, and you did not visit me. Indeed.
To be blunt about it, I find the President's faith to be an affectation because of that. On healthcare, he does not mention faith. Why not? It is the proper area to speak of such things, with actual Jesus quotes to use, unlike the anti-gay trip where they have to clip stuff out of Leviticus and pretend Leviticus does not also favor slavery and execution for Surf n' Turf. If you do not favor slavery as in Leviticus, and you do not think women should shut up in public like St Paul, then you have no Bible left to beat gay people with. Not one of these Democratic marriage defenders follows either Leviticus or the rules of St Paul. Not one of them. And yet they claim these books as the excuse for doing wrongs to others. It is really amazing behavior, and it is most certainly not exclusive to the right.

9. "Love one another"
the first great commandment,instead of love we prefer to kill each other.You can tell a true Christian from the ones that call themselves Christians,love in action and lip service love.
