Swimmers are told to wear burkinis
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 04:39 PM by JonQ
Under the rules, swimmers – including non-Muslims – are barred from entering the pool in normal swimming attire.

Instead they are told that they must comply with the "modest" code of dress required by Islamic custom, with women covered from the neck to the ankles and men, who swim separately, covered from the navel to the knees.

The phenomenon runs counter to developments in France, where last week a woman was evicted from a public pool for wearing a burkini – the headscarf, tunic and trouser outfit which allows Muslim women to preserve their modesty in the water.

An interesting development coming on the heels of Frances decision.

2. I don't have a problem with a private business doing that, but...
...public pools shouldn't do that, even some of the time.

It's government promotion of religion.

3. That's the wonderful thing about religion
It teaches that human beings are made in the image and likeness of a deity, then brands that image as sinful, disgusting, and ugly, when it is displayed.

4. Actually, the burka is pure sexism.
The reason that Muslim women are forced to wear the burka is because men supposedly cannot control the sexual urges they have when viewing the female figure. Ergo, Mulsim women are punished because Muslim men are a bunch of wieners.

5. I looked into this...SOME pools have set asides for Muslim swimmers
It is supposed to be applicable only during those hours. Some pools are now saying its only a "suggestion". However the gender separation is mandatory during those times.

6. Even if it's only one
these are public pools, they should never be segregated by religion.

If muslims have a problem with non-muslims swimming at the same time, well they can either stay out or deal with it.

I don't imagine they'd segregate out muslims for christian only times, do you?

7. This is in the UK, which is bending over backwards to not offend muslims and respect islam and
the sharia. Fortunately there is still some freedom of speech in this country so I can offend any religious group I choose.
