Firearms at political rallies
Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo posted a letter from a reader that points out that firearms aren't being carried to rallies for self defense. Rather:

This is about intimidation - visibly carrying a firearm - especially one designed specifically for killing human beings is a not-at-all veiled threat, and is meant to silence opposition.

1. Aren't there laws
that prohibit carrying firearms onto/into a public place like a library etc?

2. It all depends on where you are. Some places have such laws...
others do not. There is no uniformity of gun carry laws in this country.

It's a states' rights thing. Nobody understands.

3. I think we understand the concept of intimidation.
I think we get that carrying a gun to a public meeting is NOT about states' rights.

4. Yes, and so? I was answering a specific question from a specific
poster. Did I get something wrong in my answer?

6. Conservatard and lurkers have posted so much of this
stuff on this site in response to this issue that obfuscates that I when I found a post on TPM that very clearly and plainly makes what I believe is "our" point I wanted to pass it on.

"Their" point is, I believe, that they don't believe in democracy and that they are threatening to begin shooting people (or politicians) if the public, through a vote, passes laws they don't like. They did it with desegregation, they did it with Roe v Wade, and now they're doing it with, of all things, the right to medical care.

If we knuckle under to this type of intimidation we're done as a democracy (if that isn't already a done deal).

When these idiots (someone else posted a good term, "ambulatory smegma," which I'm going to start using) start talking about the constitution it's a real laugh. We've got a constitutional scholar for a president for the first time since Jefferson and Adams and these assholes are going to a battle of the wits unarmed.
