Colbert I. King/Washington Post: Inspiring Obama Haters
Edited on Sat Sep-12-09 04:29 AM by steven johnson
I live in a community of people engrossed in Fox News and Rush Limbaugh. So Colbert King's oped piece resonated with me. This 'us-them' thinking in this country has come to mean 'the melting pot's ok as long as minorities know their place.' Welcome to the 21st Century where in many communities white people are the minority and some of them feel threatened by it.

There's something loose in the land, an ugliness and hatred directed toward Barack Obama, the nation's first African American president, that takes the breath away. The thread of resentment is woven through conservative commentary, right-wing radio and cable TV shows, all the way to Capitol Hill.

What I will say, however, is that a lot of malicious words have been thrown around about Obama since his election: words that inflame and that inspire the kind of hatred spewed from those two Arizona and California pulpits.

Right-wing ranters don't regard the president as a political opponent. Barack Obama, in their minds, is the enemy. He is, to them, dangerous and harmful to the country.

Still, the depth of the hostility is extraordinary.

A Dangerous Kind of Hate

1. This was a great column, and needed to be said. Desperately.
There is no doubt that Faux News, Beck, Hannity, Rush and all the rest of them want to blatantly call for the president's assassination, but they only skirt around the edges right now. This column takes the unspoken on head on, and thanks for posting. Everybody here at DU needs to read it.

2. I have met the lunatics and there are quite a few of them.
Compared to the general population they must be a distinct minority but the degree of vitriol and hatred of Barack Obama, Democrats, Liberals, etc. is astounding. Of those I know personally all claim to be Christian and could be described as fundamentalist. I now avoid them totally and after talking to them (letting them know where I stand) they avoid me. Right Wing Mental Rabies is loose in the land among the few and will become more dangerous as the disease runs it course.

5. So....are we going to do anything about them, or just wring our hands
and talk amongst ourselves?
