Grand Old Party in danger of being the Game-Over Party
Marilou Johanek from the (Toledo) Blade:

TO DISMISS all the "tea party" protests, parades, and rabble-rousing during the past few weeks as just so much more "weirdness of the wing-nut summer," as one blogger put it, is tempting. But the multifaceted - some would say incoherent - demonstrations of fear-based anger signal a more worrisome development in the political dynamics of the country.

I'm afraid the vehement thrashing of Glenn Beck-inspired "angry white people" could dig an even deeper hole for the Grand Old Party than it's already in. And contrary to popular opinion, I don't wish that on any Republican or Democrat or nation that needs competing, constructive voices to move forward.

A one-party system is not in anyone's best interest. But fear is on track to utterly derail the GOP and push it to irrelevancy. Without a modern day, turn-of-the-century party leader in the mold of say, a progressive Teddy Roosevelt, the Republican Party, as we know it, could be relegated to the fringe sidelines.

Frankly, it's distressing to see the party so hunkered down in a shell that no member is willing to take it in a new, bold direction for fear of being beaten down by the Rush Limbaughs or Sean Hannitys of the uber right. Yet that's what has to happen if the few remaining moderate Republicans hope to realize some of their ideals and ideas.

2. We need to have more than one viable party
But who says the Republicans have to be one of them?

3. Republican Here
I guess I'm a Republican (more of a libertarian), but today's GOP is run by a very strange crowd, so I've been voting Democrat since the 2000 elections. Did you notice these "Republicans" call themselves Conservatives? I got the hunch many of them are former deep south democrats, more driven by racism and religious fanaticism than rational politics.

12. Hi!
:hi: I agree about today's Republican party being run by a strange crowd. Believe it or not, I hope you and other thoughtful Republicans can take your party back. It would be nice to have intelligent debates about policy again, instead of one side hurling lies and insults, then covering their ears and screaming "LA LA LA, I CAN'T HEAR YOU" when the other side tries to speak.

5. It ain't over til it's over. We get smug and convinced of the GOP demise at our own peril.
Unless Democrats can work together for our common and not have every different faction fighting to protect their private turf or pet cause to the detriment of the common cause, the Republicans will continue to be a serious thorn in the side of the progress and survival of this nation.

9. You're right, elcos. The Republican party is far from dead. Especially since their backers
own the proprietary software that counts the votes.

11. They also own the news media....
which continues to give a disproportionate amount of attention to the minority "viewpoints" whipped up by the Limbaugh/Beck wing of the media.

Through the media, the GOP continues to control political dialog in this country. It's scaring the crap outta me.

16. And they also own the MSM, so the voices of the RW fringe easily
drown out the voices of reason.

6. As long as one party is exclusively "Conservative"
As long as one party is exclusively "Conservative", they will be the party that attracts people who are guided by fear and ignorance. When fear and paralysis become the guiding principles of the party, the party can no longer come up with innovative solutions that don't just involve warfare and incarceration.

We need progressives who can drop their fears and step forward, minds clear, and take the country in positive directions.

14. I have to disagree
We should have one liberal party and one conservative party. It's the tension between those two natural human impulses that keeps us in balance, IMHO.

Unfortunately, what we have right now is one sane party that contains both the liberal and (true) conservative impulses, and one insane party.

17. they are choking on their own bile that they started drinking with the Southern Strategy
that led to the marriage with the religious right, and once racists and fundamentalists became their base, they were on the road to extinction--the machinations it took to get Bush in office were a sign of desperation not strength.

18. More of a hate-club than a political party
My boss is a moderate repug, but he listens to Rush and so forth so I get a regular list of grievances. The easiest answer is what ideas the repugs have to solve the same problem, or what idea do they have, and what different course did they follow when they controlled things that didn't lead us into a pile of crap. Mostly the answer is nothing - they aren't functioning as a political party anymore, they just run down and monkeywrench everything the democrats are for.
