Socialists favored to win Greece's election

... Papandreou's Panhellenic Socialist Movement is heavily favored to beat Karamanlis' conservative New Democracy in Sunday's vote by the nation's nearly 10 million registered voters. A key difference is the two candidates' approach to the nation's economic woes.

The last polls showed the socialists ahead by 6 to 7 percent, which could give them a slight majority in the 300-seat parliament, but any tightening of the gap might result in no party winning an overall majority.

If that happens, new elections will have to be called, most likely in November. A new electoral law that will take effect then would make it easier for the winner to form a working majority ...
