It was in the course of discussing how uncivil political and media discourse have become lately - with "the cables'' and all - that former President George H.W. Bush called the evening commentators on MSNBC - Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow - "sick puppies.''

Bush, who played host to President Barack Obama at a "Points of Light'' celebration in Texas today, sat for a CBS News radio interview in which he voiced dismay about the tone of the national discourse that Obama faces.

"I don't like it,'' Bush said. "The cables have a lot to do with it... Its not just the right.... There are plenty of people on the left."

The former president singled out Olbermann and Maddow as "sick puppies,'' saying: "the way they treat my son and anyone who's opposed to their point of view is just horrible... When our son was president they just hammered him mercilessly, and I think obscenely a lot of the time, and now it's moved to a new president."

The tenor of the harshest criticism lately "should not be par for the course,'' Bush said. "To the degree it turns off one student or one person from serving, that's bad."

I still maintain that Ross Perot split the election so badly because in 1992, Americans were ashamed of the way sick puppies, Bush, Atwater and Ailes played them in 1988. This was before Murdock bought himself a citizenship and Speaker. There was some civility left in the US.

I can still remember how upset I was when you beat Dukakis in 1988. Partly because I thought and still do that he'd have been a much better leader; but also because your election seemed to be proof of how nastiness and viciousness and ruthlessness, as personified by Lee Atwater, can too often triumph over decency. The equivalent was happening then in my country under Thatcher and it was most depressing to see it triumph again and again. It was good to see it ultimately NOT triumph in 2008. But anyway, Daddy Bush, you were one of the key people who let that genie out of that bottle, and you are not so easily going to put it back when it happens not to suit *you* and your lovely son - who got his second term to quite an extent by allowing the vile 'swiftboating' of Kerry, if you want to talk about 'incivility'.
