... It has been the longtime stance of the high court to narrow its decisions, when possible, to affect only the way a law or previous Supreme Court ruling has been applied in a given instance - instead of declaring a law unconstitutional outright.

This preserves the legislative power of Congress, while building a body of legal guidance upon which future courts, the American people, and their elected representatives may act.

The Supreme Court could have done just that in this case. Instead, the court went too far by lifting all restrictions on spending from a corporation's own coffers on ads calling for the election or defeat of a candidate.

But that wasn't even the question before the court ...
