Heard about the death of Reagan?
Heard about the death of Reagan?
JIM RUTENBERG

At the end of last month, a rumour swept Washington that Ronald Reagan had died. The story first wound its way through Republican circles, then moved on to the State Department, and finally reached the office of the House Speaker, Dennis Hastert.

The source of the report was ABC News, but the staff of the network never actually thought the former president was dead.

Rather, it seems, the word spread as the current affairs team took part in one of the division’s now-common breaking-news drills, which executives concocted to make sure the division never again gets caught off guard by breaking news, as it was during the space shuttle Columbia disaster and the start of the second war in the Gulf.

The news operation’s initial lack of speed at aggressively covering these two events in particular infuriated top brass and the division has promised it will never happen again.

2. I'd rather he didn't die too soon
Because when he does, the Republicans are going to do their best to rename every damn thing in sight after him, put his picture on the money, and generally turn him into Saint Ronnie.

I'm hoping he lingers long enough for a Democratic administration and Congress to be back in power.

4. One question,
Can you remember when Reagan was president?

3. My guess is
...that they'll save Ronnie's demise for an opportune moment, for instance, just before the 2004 elections or perhaps about the time Bush manages to bankrupt the treasury so he can end social security.

6. He'll live forever
Even when he does die, they'll start making room on Mt. Rushmore!
