Excerpt:One can't really call the tea party phenomenon a movement because there is no fundamental core of beliefs or ideals that the group revolves around. Some of the tea partiers are angry about taxes. And yet the vast majority of those who claim to be angry about taxes have seen their tax rates decrease since President Obama took office and since the tea party phenomenon began.
Some of the tea partiers are angry about socialism though many of them are recipients of social programs such as social security, disability and Medicare. They don't understand that when they use such a service they are using a social program run by the government. Whether it is federal government or local government (ie., police, fire department, garbage pickup, road maintenance), almost every American benefits in one way or another from either the federal or local and state government.
Some of the tea partiers claim to be against big government though they are hard put to give a cohesive explanation of why. The same tea partiers didn't mind when a Republican presidential administration levied their rights with the Patriot Act and grew the government deficit for two unpopular wars.
So just who are the tea partiers? They clearly are not civil libertarians. Where are the protests and rallies against the invasiveness of the Arizona anti-immigration laws? Where is the outrage over the suggestion by one Iowa politician that microchips be imbedded in illegal immigrants heads?
