Joe Lieberman's Fascist Solution To Terrorism
Joe Lieberman has a creative solution: Take away their citizenship. "If you've joined an enemy of the United States in attacking the United States and trying to kill Americans, I think you should sacrifice your rights of citizenship," Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut, told reporters Tuesday.

<. . .> Lieberman said that the revocation of citizenship would not be automatic and there would be a right to go to court and to appeal the decision.

What is amazing about Lieberman' fascist proposal is that it will not work even on Lieberman's terms. Presumably, to strip a "suspected terrorist" of his citizenship, you'll have to prove in a court of law that the suspected terrorist is actually a, you know, terrorist. And in proving it, you'll have to respect the Constitution, which sort of defeats the purpose of Lieberman's proposal. Not only is Lieberman a despicable human being, he is really as dumb as a rock. He and McCain are truly two of the stupidest people in Washington, which is saying a lot.

For the record, it seems that Lieberman is referring to this provision. The problem for Lieberman is this part:

Whenever the loss of United States nationality is put in issue in any action or proceeding commenced on or after September 26, 1961 under, or by virtue of, the provisions of this chapter or any other Act, the burden shall be upon the person or party claiming that such loss occurred, to establish such claim by a preponderance of the evidence. Any person who commits or performs, or who has committed or performed, any act of expatriation under the provisions of this chapter or any other Act shall be presumed to have done so voluntarily, but such presumption may be rebutted upon a showing, by a preponderance of the evidence, that the act or acts committed or performed were not done voluntarily.

Even David Frum thinks it's a bad idea:

Terrorists should keep their citizenship

Sen. Joe Lieberman has a bad idea.

The Connecticut senator has proposed that U.S. citizens who serve international terrorist organizations be stripped of their citizenship.

It’s a sad day when Glenn Beck (!) offers a more eloquent defense of constitutional rights than the normally statesmanlike senator from Connecticut.

But let’s leave aside the constitutional formalities and just consider: Would Lieberman’s proposal accomplish anything? The idea behind stripping a terrorist of citizenship is to avoid a morass of litigation over which precise rights the terrorist possesses.

Unfortunately, any attempt to strip terrorists of citizenship will itself plunge prosecutors into an even deeper morass of litigation.

Here’s why:

11. No, just a jackass
And let us not forget that while the NAZI party was fascist, fascism predated Hitler and is alive and well and wrapped in a flag here in the US of A.

2. Would this be applied to
a member of a home grown militia movement who was a naturlized citizen? I doubt it. Either way, it's wrong and Joe's an ass.

5. He and McCain are two sick pricks:
McCain and Lieberman's "Enemy Belligerent" Act Could Set U.S. on Path to Military Dictatorship
Glenn Greenwald calls the bill "probably the single most extremist, tyrannical and dangerous bill introduced in the Senate in the last several decades."

March 19, 2010 |

Senator John McCain (L) of Arizona listens as Senator Joe Lieberman (R) of Connecticut speaks during a press conference in Washington, DC. The two senators unveiled legislation Thursday aimed at requiring that suspected "high-value" terrorists face interrogation and trial by the US military, not civilian questioners and courts.

On March 4th, Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman introduced a bill called the "Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010" that, if passed, would set this country on a course to become a military dictatorship.

8. These past 2 weeks
have me seriously questioning the sustainability of our country and the entire planet. Wars, devastating oil spills, new and old methods of terrorism, financial unrest. It's ovah...

Never one to be a chicken little type but, all this shit is just way too much for my tired head to wrap around.

In addition, we have idiots like Joe and John just to name a few trying to fuck things up even more.

6. I believe he opens up a can of worms
He and other elected officials have taken an oath to uphold the Constitution. Every time they cast a vote in favor of their own agenda in detriment to the American people they are weakening this country. In doing this they open up this country to outside and inside forces. In my opinion this borders on treason. In affect they may be thought of as terrorists.

They are worse than terrorists because they have taken an oath and they seem not to care that they can break that oath at their whim. If he is so set on making everyone accountable perhaps we should start with him and his cronies. They never stop and think perhaps through their actions they have set in motion the motivation for terrorists.

12. The reich-wingers just salivate over this sort of thing but
what they tend to ignore is the fact these actions always have two edges. Strong walls at the border don't just keep strangers, tuurrrissteses, and scary brown people out; they keep prisoners in. Laws that strip suspected combatants, or terrorists, or anyone deemed at any minute not to me "murrikin" enough will eventually catch the ones who were originally fans of the law. Guaranteed.

The right started with suppressing black voters, then taking rights away from GLBTs. Now they're working on immigrants as the next target as the root of allllllllllllllll the problems in America. Blacks and gays weren't enough to hate on.

As more and more rights are taken away from identifiably "hateable" groups, it gets easier and easier to take rights away from everyone else. The frog is being boiled and the right keeps happily throwing rights away whilst incongruously hollering about protecting the Constitution.

The frog is coming to a boil and the right keeps chopping wood and stoking the stove. Fucking idiots.
