Bush visit: no Ireland of the welcomes for Iraq policy

With the growing concern in Europe over the war in Iraq, and outrage over pictures of Ameican soldiers torturing and abusing Iraqi prisoners in Abu Ghraib prison, questions are being raised over the wisdom of Ireland playing host to President George Bush next month.
Ireland and America have a very long and close historic relationship. Many of our ancestors left these shores in famine times to seek a new life in America, and helped to build the modern United States.
There is estimated 44 million people in the US who claim Ireland as their country of origin. And many former US Presidents have acknowledged that heritage and been good friends to Ireland. So it is no surprise that this country has played host to a succession of visits from American Presidents who have made much of that special relationship.
But this visit is a very different one. Mr. Bush, when he steps onto Irish soil, can hardly expect the same kind of adulation that followed Bill Clinton around the streets of Ireland during his visit in November 2000.

3. The Irish still love the Americans
It is the resident of the white house they dislike. I heard this over and over again when C Span played the Irish officials speaking about the WAR.

4. So why should Ireland be any different
Than anyplace else?

See, for example:

"Mr. Bush, when he steps onto Irish soil, can hardly expect the same kind of adulation that followed Bill Clinton around the streets of Ireland during his visit in November 2000."

Really, now, couldn't that be written about anyplace from New York to Nigeria?
