14. Not exactly, but the movement is creating a third party in some places, and it's
affecting the Republican nominees in the primaries, pushing them further to the right. It's kind of the like Greens and Nader have done to us.

More than that, it's affecting the party internally. The Republicans are a pro-business, anti-labor party who has hidden behind flags and Bibles since Reagan in an effort to appear populist. One reason the Republicans have been so successful is because they don't care if their rhetoric matches their actual goals. They will tell people they are for smaller government and still spend more than the Democrats, then blame all the spending on the Democrats. They rely on people believing what they say instead of looking at what they do, and they've done it well by villainizing the Democrats and playing on people's fears of anything different (Muslims, atheists, immigrants, non-whites, whatever).

It has worked, but there has always been the danger that voters would start demanding the party the Republicans pretended to be instead of the party they actually were. The GOP started the whole Tea Party thing as a gimmic to fire up their voters and fire animosity towards Obama specifically. It's worked too well for them, though, and now many who bought into the movement are turning on the GOP, both internally and externally, threatening to transform the party or replace it.

That's what the cartoon means. The GOP created the Tea Party, and they are still trying to control the movement even while the Tea Party's anger is tossing the traditional GOP overboard, too. How strong or significant it turns out to be is still the question, of course.
