On a libel suit, the White House waits
On a libel suit, the White House waits
By GLENN THRUSH | 07/22/10 5:32 PM

Shirley Sherrod is considering a libel lawsuit against conservative Web impresario Andrew Breitbart — and the White House isn’t exactly discouraging her.

Sherrod, a former (and perhaps future) Agriculture Department employee, told CNN Wednesday that she was mulling the possibility of a suit against Breitbart, who posted a shoddily edited video of a speech she delivered at an event for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in March.

"You know, I don't know a lot about the legal profession, but that's one person I'd like to get back at," she said when Anderson Cooper asked about the possibility of suing Breitbart, who runs biggovernment.com.

"I mean, he had to know that he was taking a portion of my speech, and it wouldn't be the NAACP that would go down, it would be me," Sherrod said. "Those words were coming out of my mouth. ... Is he going to take the NAACP down with my words? No."

When White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was told about her statement, he quipped, “In both this town and other towns across the country, there are very good lawyers.”

Gibbs quickly said he wasn’t goading Sherrod to sue — but he appealed to Breitbart to apologize to her, just as President Barack Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack have.

2. Personally I'd like to see Breitbart
apologize to Ms. Sherrod in court...with his wallet...big time.

7. Exactly.
A successful lawsuit--and you know that there will be organizations out there to help her--could break Breitbart's little machine.

10. Since money is all they care about, might as well hit them where they can feel pain
or anything at all.

4. Nothing damages the pshche of a winger more
than to be relieved of a portion of his coin of the realm; especially if it is re-allocated to a visible minority. :-)

5. Pipe dream
It's a nice feel-good idea, but all she'll be doing is giving him lots of free publicity.

8. Gibbs is being too cute by half here.
As is his history. If Sherrod sues Breitbart he would drag half the White House including Obama into court. He would be entitled to do so as a defense. No lawyer in their right mind would advise a suit.
