Comments (87) Add to My Stories Factories making sought-after Apple iPads and iPhones in China are forcing staff to sign pledges not to commit suicide, an investigation has revealed.
At least 14 workers at Foxconn factories in China have killed themselves in the last 16 months as a result of horrendous working conditions.
Many more are believed to have either survived attempts or been stopped before trying at the Apple supplier's plants in Chengdu or Shenzen.

5. Holy shit. Should we really be buying iPads and iPhones if the working conditions are this bad?
What are we directly supporting?

6. Conditions must be unbearable if it has come to this:
that the suicides are out of control in that industry and the workers are being threatened in such an insane matter. Your question is a good one and should be asked by consumers in this country.

9. Problem is, Foxconn makes an awful lot of products for lots of companies.
Pick a major computer company. Odds are that Foxconn have supplied components for that specific device. Some devices they do make outright - Amazon's Kindle is made by them for example.

It would be hard to make an ethically sound computer. I could select parts from "better companies" for self-assembled desktop computers, but then Foxconn also does compete on price.

Mark.
