How Public Transit is a Luxury of the Poor
http://mildlyrelevantthoughts.com/2011/07/how-public-transit-is-a-luxury-of-the-poor/
Yesterday afternoon I was busy counting down the hours until I can rid myself of using a car daily, as if the slab of steel were a benign tumor being removed. For those who don’t know, I’m taking all things Mildly Relevant to downtown Cleveland, where I’ll be within walking distance of my day job, trains and buses. One of the reasons I opted for this location was the amount of time I’ll save not driving, which became a plus due to my distaste of commutes. (Seriously, how many hours of our lives are we going to waste in our boxes-with-wheels?). If I could play public transit God for a moment, I would create more lines for our train system – the Rapid. So I tweeted out something nonchalant about wanting an extension of the Rapid going due west for stops in Lakewood and Rocky River – two lovely suburbs that would be within the city limits of most mid-to-large towns. Shortly thereafter, the Greater Cleveland Rapid Transit Authority’s twitter account (@GCRTA) tweeted me, “Much as we might want to, the current Federal budget talks are actually trying to CUT transit funding by 30% – speak up!” It’s then – and only then- that I realized that public transit must be a luxury of the poor!

1. oh God, public transit
i remember when I used to think it conceivable that our society would some day try to expand those systems. That seems now like a total fantasy. In this age of "pragmatism", federal public transit funding seems like the least "pragmatic" thing in the world, and the easiest thing to cut. Regardless, that's the next thing I'm going to contact my reps about. I won't get 100% defeatist about it. I'll take inspiration from that Cleveland system responding to that blog and encouraging activism.

2. The old streetcar system DID go thru Lakewood and RR. The Rapid (handy as it is,
depending on where one lives), is a skeletal descendant of what used to be a much larger passenger rail system. Too bad.

4. Great map!
My seniors have described to me a day when people could get around all of Northeast Ohio without having to so much as activate a wrist flexor to turn on an ignition. Oh, what a day...

7. Check out the documentary 'Taken For A Ride'
It's all about the way General Motors and others conspired to bring down the transit system in America. You can watch it on YouTube:

5. I would love to, but...
Apparently you have to be a donor to post in the Groups section. And as you can see from my support page (which I'm shameless posting here: http://joebaur.com/Support.html), I'm not quite in a position to donate at the moment. But hopefully I can be sooner rather than later!

Cheers!

8. UPDATE!!!
Just added...
EDIT: I sincerely apologize, but I forgot to address the concern that these poor folks will no longer have access to… y’know… grocery stores. Fear not! I’m sure the charitable folks over at McDonalds would be happy to build another facility in the new poverty-colony. Personally, I’d prefer a ripoff burger joint. Don’t want to be too generous!

9. The elites controlling the status quo
hate mass transit = 'comm'uting = socialism = allows the masses to share knowledge and organize and express their humanity= collective power

Conversely they love independent car ownership = individualism = the survival of the fittest = might makes right= divide and conquer

10. Sometimes when I drive...
It feels like survival of the fittest. Dude cuts me off, because his car can get mine's ass. Well jokes on him! I'm not using my car and will be on the train instead - which, for the record, could total his car!
