Koch Brothers' group "Americans for Prosperity, is messing with the Wisconsin elections in 2 dstrict
From TPM:

As Politico reports, mailers have now turned up from Americans For Prosperity Wisconsin, addressed to voters in two of the Republican-held recall districts, where the elections will be held on August 9. The mailers ask recipients to fill out an absentee ballot application, and send it in -- by August 11, after Election Day for the majority of these races.

..snip...
The mailing address for the applications is listed as "Absentee Ballot Application Processing Center, P.O. Box 1327, Madison WI 53701-1327." A Google search shows that this address is not any sort of government office, but has been used by the conservative group Wisconsin Family Action.

In addition, Wisconsin Right To Life previously used the same address for absentee ballot application letters and phone calls that were sent out shortly before the July 12 Democratic primaries, but after the official deadlines for the applications. The group responded to criticism, saying the phone calls were intended to be for the general elections in August.....

9. The letters tell voters to mail in by Aug 11, the election os on Aug 9
Edited on Mon Aug-01-11 05:57 PM by housewolf
They're misleading voters into thinking that they have 2 extra days to get their ballots in. Being who they are, what their interests and and who they support financially, it's probably not a typo

10. It is still not clear to me how this helps them...
Unless, of course, they sent out letters to their guys advising them of the dupe.

However, that would be an act of outright slam-dunk stupidity. A slam-dunk case for a prosecutor, that is.

11. High turnouts historically favor Democrats,

so depressing or suppressing the vote is to the Republicans' advantage.

That said, these were sent to voters in solidly Democratic districts:

The fliers, http://www.politico.com/static/PPM187_ballotapp.html obtained by POLITICO, ask solidly Democratic voters to return ballots for the Aug. 9 election to the city clerk "before Aug. 11."

A Democrat on the ground in Wisconsin said the fliers were discovered to be hitting doors in District 2 and District 10 over the weekend.

"These are people who are our 1's in the voterfile who we already knew. They ain't AFP members, that's for damn sure," the source said.

4. Yet another indicator that the US is vulnerable to becoming a failed state
Is this one right here;

Legitimacy of the State

  • Massive and endemic corruption or profiteering by ruling elites.
  • Resistance of ruling elites to transparency, accountability and political representation, revealed by scandals, investigative journalism, criminal prosecution or civil action.
  • Widespread loss of popular confidence in state institutions and processes, e.g., widely boycotted or flawed elections, mass public demonstrations, sustained civil disobedience, inability of the state to collect taxes, resistance to military conscription, rise of armed insurgencies.
  • Growth of crime syndicates linked to ruling elites.

Koch-backed group's fake eviction notices rile up Detroit
By Stephanie Condon

Residents in a Detroit neighborhood received a scare this week when they found what appeared to be eviction notices on their doors. The flyers, however, turned out to be political pamphlets in opposition to the construction of a controversial new bridge.

The fake eviction notices were posted by a local chapter of Americans for Prosperity, the conservative political advocacy group backed by Charles and David Koch, the billionaire brothers who run Koch Industries and are longtime libertarians. Local political leaders and columnists are condemning the group for scaring residents -- whose homes sit in the epicenter of the nation's foreclosure crisis -- while refusing to disclose which of its corporate backers are funding the flyers.

At the center of the flyer in question, in large print, reads: "Eviction Notice." In medium print, the top of the flyer reads, "This property is subject to seizure by the Michigan Department of Transportation." Only in small print does the flyer say the property in question could be seized if legislation approving the bridge is passed.
