Editor’s note: Mark Heisler survived the newspaper business, at least for 44 years, one month and 29 days. He was a veteran sportswriter for the Los Angeles times, a columnist who was unceremoniously laid off just a season before he planned to retire. Heisler was as surprised as his many fans to learn the news. A witness for 44 years, he reminds us that newspapers were in trouble long before the Internet, and that they continue to offer something their competitors can’t match. This is an inside look at the decline of one of the world’s great papers, as it was bought, chopped and tinkered with to an imitation of its former self.


Who turned out the lights?

Not that the sudden end of my 44-year career in newspapers was disorienting, but I found myself feeling my body to see if I was still here, asking myself, “Who are you?”

It was a joke, I think.

For the last 32 years, I had been “Mark Heisler of the Los Angeles Times.” Before that, “Mark Heisler of the Philadelphia Bulletin” or “Mark Heisler of Somewhere” since June 1, 1967, when Gannett hired me at $125 a week. .............(more)
