Deconstructing the (Socialist) Pledge of Allegiance, a la George Carlin
Edited on Sun Aug-21-11 12:10 AM by drakonyx
Thousands of people have heard the late George Carlin's comedy routine, in which he boils down the Ten Commandments into a much more economical number: two. (Sound familiar? Seems like Jesus did the same thing - although his two were different than George's and didn't have anything to do with nookie.) Now, what if we were to do the same thing with the Pledge of Allegiance?

2. It's more an artifact of our Civil War than anything else.
And Bellamy's "Looking Backward" is a bizarre read.

5. That was by Edward Bellamy, Francis's brother.
But Francis described himself as a Christian Socialist.

Looking Backwards was a highly influential book of that time.

Looking Backward: 2000-1887 is a utopian novel by Edward Bellamy, a lawyer and writer from western Massachusetts; it was first published in 1888. According to Erich Fromm, Looking Backward is "one of the most remarkable books ever published in America".<1>

It was the third-largest bestseller of its time, after Uncle Tom's Cabin and Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.<1> It influenced a large number of intellectuals, and appears by title in many of the major Marxist writings of the day. "It is one of the few books ever published that created almost immediately on its appearance a political mass movement".<2> In the US alone, over 162 "Bellamy Clubs" sprang up to discuss and propagate the book's ideas.<3> This political movement came to be known as Nationalism, not to be confused with the political concept of nationalism.<4> The novel also inspired several utopian communities.Looking Backward: 2000-1887 is a utopian novel by Edward Bellamy, a lawyer and writer from western Massachusetts; it was first published in 1888. 3. A socialist wrote the Pledge of Allegiance
"The year was 1892 and the author was a Baptist minister by the name of Francis Bellamy who had no tie to the government

whatsoever. Tea party types might be enamored of the idea that a Baptist minister came up with the pledge ... except for

the fact that this particular man of the cloth also happened to be a socialist. And a big-shot union activist. In fact, he

chaired a committee of state school superintendents for the National Education Association, which today is the nation's

largest labor union. How about them apples, corporate conservatives?"

And I have no excuse, being a former history teacher and NEA state affiliate staff member. Thanks for the info!
