Good Day, USA!

Disastrous economic policies and deregulation began with Reagan’s “It’s morning in America” campaign. That was 30 years ago and it is no longer “morning in America,” but the stark light of day. The morning mist has lifted, the fog burned off, and our sleepy eyes are now wide awake.

As the day marches on, we see ahead of us the encroaching evening, the twilight of a dream and the coming fall of night. A night with our homes foreclosed, our jobs shipped overseas, our children uneducated, our elders with no health care, our environment fouled, and our desire for peace violated by the machines of war.

As the day burns on, the shadows deepen. Shadows cast by obscene corporate profits, outrageous CEO compensation, fraudulent financial institutions, and unprecedented government corruption.

But night has not yet fallen. Although the twilight quickly approaches, daylight still remains; daylight enough for us to wrest the fruits of our labors from those who would sell our dreams to the highest bidder in the name of greed.

There is daylight enough for us to stand together and Occupy! For those who cannot march, occupy with your words. Write letters to the editor of local newspapers, to your representatives, and to the White House. Write on blogs. Occupy Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. And Occupy your own front yard!

It’s not solely about occupying a park, but occupying what you can. It took each and every one of our parents and grandparents to make this country what it once was. It is now our turn to make this country what it will be.

Make the most of the light of day. Make each day, a good day to Occupy!
