Democrats knocked off balance by Bush's alerts

Ron Fournier THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON -- The politics of terrorism has Democrats tied in knots.

Each time President Bush raises fears of a possible attack, the political debate shifts from his most troublesome issue (Iraq) to one of his strongest (the war on terrorism) while Democrats fight their impulse to question the president's motives.

The advantages of incumbency were in full display Sunday, when Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge warned of possible al-Qaida terrorist attacks to financial institutions in New York City, Washington and Newark, N.J.

The information was obtained in the past 36 to 72 hours, officials said Sunday, increasing anxieties about a potential strike.

The Bush administration let a 24-hour news cycle pass before acknowledging that most of the intelligence, while recently obtained, was three or four years old.<snip>

1. This is good. Fournier is saying that Bush is politicizing the alerts...
...without saying that he's politicizing the alerts.

"Dean sees red over code orange
Doubts about latest terror alert seem justified -- is Bush using Department of Homeland Security as 'trump card'?"

SNIP..."Somebody owes Howard Dean an apology.

"Over the past few days, the former Vermont governor and Democratic Presidential candidate has endured a barrage of bad press and nasty commentary, simply because he expressed honest doubts about the government’s latest terror alarm. Republican pundits and politicians predictably denounced him. Senator John Kerry disowned Dr. Dean’s remarks, and Senator Joe Lieberman went further, suggesting that anyone who harbors such doubts must not be “in their right mind.” SNIP

2. I also like this line:
"The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they feared retribution from the White House."

If words like this are appearing in an Associated Press story, it is a very good omen.

7. How long can the cities afford to spend the millions
that it is costing to increase security like they are having to? And how can they afford not to do it?
