DESPITE PRESIDENT'S MILD SPEECH, GOP CONVENTION TURNS INTO A HATE-A-THON


GEORGE W. BUSH'S speech last night certainly was in character: He plays at being likable, forward-thinking, optimistic - while others do the dirty work.

That's the strategy: Mention 9/11 anywhere it might possibly fit (and lots of places where it most surely doesn't, most especially, Iraq).

Be nice, while others busily slice and dice.

So Bush was magnanimous a few days ago, saying John Kerry should be proud of his service in Vietnam. Then he sent out Mrs. Sweetness and Light, Laura Stepford - uh, Bush - to say the loathsome, lying Swift Boat Veterans ads were not "unfair."
