Bill Maher-New Rules (9/11)
This was priceless....
http://www.hbo.com/billmaher/new_rules/

September 3, 2004

snip-

And finally, New Rule: You can't run on a mistake. Franklin Roosevelt didn't run for re-election claiming Pearl Harbor was his finest hour. Abe Lincoln was a great president, but the high point of his second term wasn't theater security. 9/11 wasn't a triumph of the human spirit. It was a fuck-up by a guy on vacation.

Now, don't get me wrong, Mr. President. I'm not blaming you for 9/11. We have blue-ribbon commissions to do that. And I'm not saying there was anything improper about your immediate response to the attacks. Someone had to stay in that classroom and protect those kids from Chechen rebels.

But by the looks of your convention, you'd think that the worst thing that ever happened to us was the best thing that ever happened to you. You just can't keep celebrating the deadliest attack ever as if it's your personal rendezvous with greatness. You don't see old men who were shot down during World War II jumping out of a plane every year. I mean, other than your dad.

But even your dad didn't run for re-election based on a recession and his propensity to barf on the Japanese. Now, I know you'd like us all to get swept away with emotionalism and stop sweating the small stuff like the deficit and the environment, and focus on what's really important: how you look in a fireman's hat. But crying during your speech? I mean, come on! There's no crying in politics! It's not fair! That's a trick chicks use. How are we supposed to discuss this rationally if you're going to cry?! There's a name for people who exploit their participation in historical events for political gain. They're called the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

So I say, if you absolutely must win an election on the backs of dead people, do it like they do in Chicago, and have them actually vote for you.

Chechen rebels held kids in a school as hostages....
Bush sat in a classroom in Florida on 9/11...

ahhh, the joke is that Bush was protecting the
Florida kids from Chechen rebels...

maybe that's too close to home for you russian33...

7. Before
Maher's Remark was made before the hostage situation turned into a bloodbath.
I doubt even Maher could joke about that. Then again...

3. I'm glad some people get this who are writing articles..
This has been my contention from day one...as Bill Maher so articulately says it.."you don't run on a mistake".

I say we run with this!

4. I agree....let's cut through the fairy tales about 9/11
Haven't seen an administration re-write history
as thoroughly to give themselves credit....
as Bush Inc.

6. Well, Bush is trying to argue...
...that 9-11 wasn't a mistake, it was a totally unforseeable dastardly attack on America by inscrutable-but-evil evil people and he could not possibly have known they were going to do it and there's absolutely nothing nothing NOTHING do you hear me? NOTHING he could have done in advance even to try to prevent it so don't let me hear you mentioning the FBI reports of terrorist suspects taking flying (but not landing) instructions, etc. August 6 PDB entitled "Bin Laden Determined To Strike Inside USA"? What August 6 PDB entitled "Bin Laden Determined To Strike Inside USA"?

8. You should express some of that in a letter to the editor
I expect a lot of DUers could reply to Cheney's
smarmy reasoning to not change administrations.

9/11 happened on Cheney's watch.

15. Bush was innocently blindsided by 9/11 but Clinton should have known
according to multitudes of bush supporters. There was no way no how for Bush to know something was going to happen but it is Clinton's fault for knowing al qaida was planning to use airplanes as guided missles. This kind of illogic makes me

10. Mr. Nownow was just reading some of this to me aloud.
Once I got him hooked on Atrios, the only way I ever scoop him on anything is here on DU.

Besides the stuff already quoted, I loved this:

<<New Rule: If you're watching people play cards on TV, you either need a better hobby or a drinking problem. First, there was "Celebrity Poker." Then there was "Celebrity Blackjack." I saw one show that was just Camryn Mannheim scratching lottery tickets.

What's on TV has to be at least as interesting as what's on the average security monitor at a convenience store. >>

I've always wondered who on earth would watch other people sit around and play cards, and why.

11. That was funny
I watched a couple of games of Texas hold em coz
I didn't know how to play...so I guess it's to learn
the game and some strategy. But it certainly doesn't
hold ya forever....

14. I doubt Kerry would himself use this but....
surrogates can certainly remind the country
that 9/11 happened on Bush Inc.'s watch after
receiving warnings that they took no action
on before it happened. Remind voters that
instead of relying on help from other countries
to find bin Laden and bring him to justice,
that this administration chose to invade Iraq
to depose a dictator and replace him with our
own, while insulting countries like France
and Germany.

I'd love to hear Kerry get as honest as we
are but can understand like Bush, he leaves it
to others to do the dirty work.
