Dream come true

C.Q. Querrey's letter asks who Osama bin Laden and Abu Masab al-Zarqawi are rooting for in our upcoming elections. That's an easy one. A bin Laden ad seeking a U.S. president would read like this:
"I am interested in a U.S. president who will say he wants to get the real perpetrator of 9/11, but actually sends a token force of fighters to pretend they are seeking me out so that I can roam free throughout Afghanistan and rebuild my forces for the next attack on the United States.
"It would be extremely helpful if the candidate for this job would invade another Arab country, say Iraq, telling whatever lies necessary to justify it. This would be my dream come true.
"Such a war would tie up the majority of American troops, drain the U.S. Treasury, making the United States even more vulnerable, inflame the entire Arab world (helping me recruit thousands of new fighters) and tear the U.S. public apart. My recruits from all over the area could actually train with live bullets, using young Americans as targets. The thousands of innocent Arabs who would die would be blamed on America.
"I must admit, I can't imagine a U.S. leader so lacking in vision, so naive, so egocentric, so narrow-minded, so pig-headed, so bereft of historical perspective and so careless with American lives and resources, so this is probably too much to ask.
"Or is it? If someone like this stepped forward, I would surely support him for re-election."
