Janette Howard stepped into the federal election campaign yesterday with an unprecedented intervention, accusing those who claim the Prime Minister lied during the children overboard affair of "attempting to manipulate attitudes".

In an exclusive interview with The Sun-Herald's magazine Sunday Life, Mrs Howard describes how she witnessed her husband's conversation with former government adviser Mike Scrafton, which became the subject of heated controversy when he disputed the Prime Minister's version of what he was told.

Mrs Howard said she found the accusations "particularly unfair".
