Young voters turning to fake anchor for insight - Jon Stewart
Young voters turning to fake anchor for insight
Comic Jon Stewart scores points with rant on 'Crossfire'
Joe Garofoli, Chronicle Staff Writer

Thursday, October 21, 2004

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry has secured the support of a man who influences millions of young voters: Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central's late-night satire "The Daily Show."

But Stewart's comment in an interview that he'll vote for Kerry isn't an endorsement, his representatives say. Besides, his audience of young viewers doesn't pay attention to endorsements anyway.

To this new generation of voters, actions are a more powerful statement - - like Stewart eviscerating the hosts of CNN's "Crossfire" live on their show last week.

"Here is someone who is ridiculing the system, yet he will be part of the system and vote," said Josh Koenig, a co-founder of Music for America, a year- old effort based in Redwood City to engage young voters. "When he did that on 'Crossfire,' we were jumping up and down. That's exactly how young people feel. "

2. Is 32 considered an old fogy?
If so, put me in that category. I haven't heard someone make so much sense in a long time. I'd trust him over any news source, any day.

3. It's pretty bad when a "fake" news show is more reliable than...
"real" news shows.

BTW, you're only as old as the person you're sleeping with (a joke my 63 year-old boss likes to say - repeatedly).

6. Fortunately no.
While he tries to be sexist, he actually has standards and character. He doesn't own loofas either.

15. The 63 year old
better not tell that joke to the 18 year old he wants to sleep with. She (or he) might not like that idea (of "being" 63 - that is).

7. Personally I think
that what Jon Stewart did on Crossfire may be one of the most relevant things to happen in the media in several years. Did anybody else notice that the Crossfire audience was on Jon's side, not on the side of the two hosts of the show they came to see? That says more to me about the trouble we're in with our media than anything else. American's aren't fools, we're just not being informed well enough.

9. Fake News ? Hardly
Does the main stream press actually buys into the fake news bizness?

Jon Stewart can say he's fake news all day long....but it ain't true. The kids and all ages who watch The Dail Show know there's more truth than not in Stewart & Co's, reporting.

Shit, I trust Jon Stewart far more than CNN and the rest of the corporate shit media channels.

11. What Bill "Dildo" O'Lielly calls "stoned slackers"...
Interesting:

  • 670,000 people have downloaded the 13-minute clip of Stewart's appearance, more than the average number of "Crossfire" viewers.

  • 1,900 largely supportive e-mails about Stewart's appearance on CNN

  • viewers are more likely to know the positions and background of the candidates than people who don't watch any late-night comedy

  • 90 percent of those surveyed planned to vote.
