Dowd: Rove's Revenge
WASHINGTON — Just how much did Karl Rove hate not being one of the cool guys in high school in the 60's? Enough to hatch schemes to marshal the forces of darkness to take over the country?

Oh, yeah.

A supporter of Nixon against Kennedy at 9, the teenage Karl was, in his description, "a big nerd," a small guy with a pocket protector, briefcase, and glasses almost as big as his head.
...
Even as a child, I could feel the rush of J.F.K.'s presidency racing forward, opening up a thrilling world of possibilities and modernity. We were going to the moon. We were confronting racial intolerance. We were paying any price and bearing any burden for freedom. We were respecting faith but keeping it out of politics. Our president was inspiring much of the world. Our first lady was setting the pace in style and culture.

W.'s presidency rushes backward, stifling possibilities, stirring intolerance, confusing church with state, blowing off the world, replacing science with religion, and facts with faith. We're entering another dark age, more creationist than cutting edge, more premodern than postmodern. Instead of leading America to an exciting new reality, the Bushies cocoon in a scary, paranoid, regressive reality. Their new health care plan will probably be a return to leeches.

2. Cutesie Shmootsie
F*ing Dowd. First she paints Kerry as an assclown and then mourns the Dark Ages of Bush. She cares nix about anything but her cutesie bootsie cleverisms. She is part of the problem and revels in our current quagmire conditions.

8. I agree
I read her editorial a few weeks ago on Kerry ---she did indeed run her pen over Kerry. also on Imus interview a week or so ago. Yet she does worse to Bush!!

4. Wow! That's brilliant!

Instead of the New Frontier, Karl and W. offer the New Backtier.

(snip — in excerpt above}

America has always had strains of isolationism, nativism, chauvinism, puritanism and religious fanaticism. But most of our leaders, even our devout presidents, have tried to keep these impulses under control. Not this crew. They don't call to our better angels; they summon our nasty devils.

The new evangelicals challenge science because they've been stirred up to object to social engineering on behalf of society's most vulnerable: the poor, the sick, the sexually different.

Yet the Bush conservatives do their own social engineering. They thought they could toughen up the American character with the invasion of Iraq. Now they want to reshape the country on "moral" issues - though their morality seems to allow them to run a campaign full of blatant distortions and character assassination, and to mislead the public about the war.

5. Let me get this straight...
..Rove, as a youngster became secretly enamored with Camelot despite his budding conservative leanings, grew up to create the Bizzaro World Kennedys: Laura, with her lime-green drapery clothing is Bizzaro World Jackie, and Bush, who bravely stands up against the wrong nation in a crisis is Bizzaro World Jack.

6. Very cute, MoDo.

If you didn't know more about her, you'd think, great commentary. But the problem with MoDo is that for the last year or so she repeatedly got all cleverly snide and snarky about the very people who were trying to save us from another Bush term. One column in particular that deeply pissed me off during the primaries was one in which she descended to the depths of cattiness over Wes Clark's argyle sweater (A sweater! In New Hampshire in January! OMG!) Once Kerry was nominated she never missed a chance to get in a few digs about him, some of them quite mean-spirited. Her interview with Letterman was so infuriating I turned it off. So, Miz MoDo, here we are on the verge of a big ol' Bush-induced shitstorm, and you're bitchin' about how awful it's gonna be. Dare I ask -- Why the FUCK didn't you use your not-inconsiderable writing skills to try to boost Bush's opposition when it could have done some good?

7. Your'e right on about that. To say nothing about

" her cleverness " helping to defeat Al Gore with the same kind of foolishness. If it weren't for her and some others who couldn't resist repeating the lies about Gore we wouldn't have had a first Bush term.

Daily Howler has chapter and verse on these clowns, now wringing their hands over our terrible fate.

9. Love her or hate her, she nailed the bastards today,
"Back in 1994, Newt Gingrich said he wanted the government to mold the moral character of Americans and wipe out the counter culture of the McGoverniks. He got de-railed, but now he and his pious friends are back in full cry, messing with our psyches and and excluding themselves from the rules they demand others follow. They"ll eventually do themselves in, but will they do us in first."

Thanks for a great article.
