David Brooks paints a realistic picture

Before you all keel over because of the author's byline, please give this a read. He makes some sense. It's the unknown exurban sprawl where the GOP is piling up its support. In fact, though Brooks doesn't note this, BOTH the midsize towns -- 5K to 50K population -- and the cities are blue. But their combined population is not quite sizable enough to close out the exurbs in a classic pincer move.

Those amorphous but huge exurbs are doing in the Democrats. To the extent that blue believers disdain and would never move to such enclaves, then we are really are segregating ourselves, and there's little purple remaining.

3. I think it is pretty simple. The GOP lied to various groups, and they
all fell for it. We haven't hit bottom in this country yet. Those doing really well either don't care or aren't paying attention. I am very upset about the Fundies asking for their pay now. That doesn't sound like separation of church and state to me. Also what makes them any different than a corporation asking for favors then. We need to fight them big time.

4. I think that he makes an overreach of what these surburbs are
These are very much like small town America - which is where most of the surburbs are located. The main thing driving republicanism in these areas, in my view, is the conservative talkshows and faux-news. Democrats have been very slow in acknowledging the reality of these conservative talkshows and faux-news and that will continue to impact negatively on the chances for the democrats in any election. Until we get our own pervasive means of inundating the media with sharpened and focused positions, we will continue to be at a disadvantage.

5. Yes, right-wing radio has an effect ...

... but then why do the midsize towns still go blue? Presumably they're listening to the same constipation-of-the-mind and diarrhea-of-the-mouth propaganda from Limbaugh and Hannity.

6. Brooks interviews six people in a major urban area . . .
and hey, presto! - he's suddenly a sociologist. His analysis is weak, his data unconvincing and his bias all too obvious. Shitty writer, shittier trend-monger.

8. I hate to disagree, but...
Once again, some freeper is pontificating to the dems as to how we could've won this election. Four words neocon/David Brooks: Fuck off and die!
