They're Throwing Journalists Into Jail Right Here In The USA
By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF
Published on 11/11/2004

"Paging China! Help us! Urge the U.S. government to respect freedom of the press!

It does sound topsy-turvy, doesn't it? Generally, it's China and Zimbabwe that are throwing journalists in prison, while the U.S. denounces the repression over there.

But now similar abuses are about to unfold within the United States, part of an alarming new pattern of assault on American freedom of the press."

Here is the link, from The Day in New London, CT.

1. a judiciary molded and tempered by nearly 30 years of corrupt...
...and fascistic administrations are wholely capable of destroying a free press.

4. And who enabled these corrupt and fascistic administrations?
That would be the corrupt corporate media who have been failed miserably at speaking truth to power.

Paybacks are hell.

2. Oh no, this is a bait and switch ploy
Create cover for the Plame reporters and whatever other Bush investigations are going on. Fitzgerald is now an over-zealous prosecutor? Wonder what this one's about Justice Dept investigating "telephone calls made by two New York Times reporters — uncovering all their confidential sources in the fall of 2001." They must have some really nasty stuff on the Bushies to start creating a smoke screen already.

7. I'm with you -- NOT with Kristoff on at least 2 of the 3
cases he cites. And I'm usually VERY pro-journalist, pro-First Amendment. Not when treason is the subject matter. Nosiree.

11. Huh?
Please elaborate.

The first case is a reporter who broadcast proof of corruption of an official.
The second is the prosecutor on the Plame case punishing people other than Novak.
The third is the Wen Ho case.

I really don't know much about these cases, except Novak's role in the Plame thing (probably protecting a higher-up in the administration who could be guilty of a felony). What are your sources?

3. The first of many
Welcome to fascist America, boys and girls. This could start a revolution. Seriously. And you WONDER why those of us in the Western states are opposed to gun control. THIS IS WHY GUN CONTROL IS HATED OUT HERE!

6. this is bad news from any angle....
...yeah, Judith Miller deserves to suffer some for her gullibility and her role in promoting war in Iraq....
...but there should be no glee over reporters being thrown in jail or threatened in the U.S.
...It seemed to me like the press was in a re-awakening tthe last couple of months before the election....I can easily see Bush trying to quash that as he tries to work his evil...

and as to Novak not being in trouble 'for no obious reason.....'...well, the reason is obvious to some of us...

8. VOMIT!!!!!!
this is SICKENING... ugh. not my America.. I've got to do even more than I'm doing. It's hard with what's going on in my life, but there's got to be more I can do. We need organization for all cities over 100,000 for monthly marches against really dumbass policies or treatment of the people, environment, etc., as Democrats, I know smaller groups do this stuff somewhat regularly on the West Coast.

12. Folks, like I said in the other thread
This is perfectly legal. The Supreme Court ok'ed it in the 1970s with Branzburg v. Hayes. This is not changing without a Constitutional amendment.

Throw enough journalists in jail and they will have a true protest on their hands! Maybe they will finally start doing their jobs!
