The situation in Ukraine
http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/read.cgi?id=20041124&tid=1434847

(Mods, I realize a comic strip site is an unusual source of LBN, but it does appear to be a legitimate account)

... is so much worse than I had thought. I just attended a rally (always a good source of unbiased information - I know) where I learned much more about what's going on there.

This information is from a very reliable source - a friend and teacher of mine Dr. Natalia Shostak, who is Ukrainian and was sent to Ukraine as an election observer for the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. She says that the train system is completely shut down, and all flights out of Ukraine are cancelled. As well, in western Ukraine the roads are closed. This means, literally, there are huge concrete blocks placed on the highways to prevent the mass movement of people.

The "hundreds of thousands" (that's her phrase, I'm sure she didn't count so I'll put it in quotes) of protestors in Kiev's Independence Square are just the tip of the iceburg. There are also protests in other cities in Ukraine and many protest rallies. As well, there are thousands of people at the train station in Lviv trying to get to Kiev to join the group there. Of course, the trains are not running, but they'll be there for when they start again.

The United States claiming illegitimate election results based on fraud.

4. If Ukrainians
so despise being ruled from Moscow, why did they give up their nuclear weapons so easily 10 years ago?

It would seem to me that a nuclear-armed and independent Ukraine could tell the rest of the world to go Cheney themselves much as little Israel has been doing for about 40 years now.

5. And if Israel told the US to go Cheney themselves?
I don't think they would last a year.

6. Good point, I suppose
It would seem to me, though, that once a country has achieved membership in the WMD club, even if by default by virtue of being a successor state to the USSR, said country ought not easily to give up that status in a world governed by "rogue" WMD-armed states such as the U.S.A.

I cannot see that Ukraine has achieved anything over the past 10 years by giving up its nukes. Now it is more or less defenseless and is being manipulated by outside powers, just as critics of the unilateral disarmament prophesied.
