Greg Stanford (Milwaukee Journal): Bush has flunked

President Bush has flunked the test of leadership that the collapse of New York's Twin Towers offered. He has exposed himself as a small man--dwarfed by events that he has clumsily tried to master.

A great president would have seized the moment to lift the nation and the world to new heights of civilization.

Bush seized the moment to advance pet causes of the political right: enhancing police powers at the expense of individual freedom, finishing the job Daddy Bush started by reinvading Iraq, passing tax cuts that primarily favor the rich and consolidating Republican power.

What a mess the president's making of things...
