O'Neill affair reminds me of an old joke from Soviet era
Boris: Did you hear about Vasily, Alexei?

Alexei: No, Boris. What happened?

Boris: Last Tuesday, Vasily seemed to suddenly lose his mind. He ran down the street, shouting at the top of his lungs, "The Party Chairman is a fool, the Party Chairman is an idiot !!! The Party Chairman is a fool, the Party Chairman is an idiot !!!" Over and over. Like a madman.

Alexei: Really? What happened to him?

Boris: Eventually, State Security caught up to him, tried him and sent him off to Siberia.

Alexei: Foolish devil. What was his sentence?

Boris: He got 21 years.

Alexei: 21 years?

Boris: Yes. 1 year for defaming the Party, and 20 for revealing a state secret.

:)

1. Here's another joke
Boris: Did you hear about O'Neill. He works for the Bush administration. He has made one stupid comment after another, rocking the markets. He is a just another untrustworthy, stupid Republican.

Alexei: No, Boris. He recently left the administration. And now he has spoken out against Bush.

Boris: Oh goodness. He is now intelligent and trustworthy.

Alexei: That's right!
--

Let's not fool ourselves. O'Neill is and was a stupid, untrustworthy Republican.

3. wrong
he's a stupid, untrustworthy republican who is not following in lock-step with the stupid, untrustworthy republican leadership.

that makes his newsworthy, and the fact that he's delivering ammo to bush's opponents makes him very much worth paying attention to.

with the usual large doses of salt and anti-emetics....

4. Wrong.
Just because someone is a Republican doesn't mean they're stupid and untrustworthy. O'Neill was never for tax cuts and never for the war. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

7. He supported 2001 tax cuts
Which were the most irresponsible. (He opposed the following round) And he said publicly the dollar shouldn't be strong, which had a deleterious effect on the economy. Not a bright bulb.

13. The dollar shouldn't be strong.
Unless you don't care about domestic industries and the jobs that go with them.

6. I see
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 09:37 PM by BigBigBear
only "outraged" Democrats are allowed to call Bush on being a two-faced simpleton.

O'Neill may never have been cut out to be Treasury Secretary, but I fail to see how that has any bearing what he says about Cabinet meetings.

The man ran a couple of companies - he knows stuffed-shirt yes men and professional mediocrities when he sees them.

Anyway...the proof's in the documents, assuming any of them see the light of day before Treasury seeks to subpoena them as possible evidence.

Edit: In my other posts on this matter, I admitted that O'Neill is no standard bearer for the anti-Bush cause. What I meant to refer to was his being subject to a criminal investigation - not for revealing any classified material, but for using firsthand experience to assert that Bush is a lying simpleton.

Hope that clarifies.

11. And how many millions has your brilliance gotten you?
He is neither stupid or a fool. Untrustworthy maybe as he is a republican but in this instance I believe him before I believe any of his critics.

2. That's about right....
althoug I wonder what will eventually happen to O'Neill. Given that
the Treasury dept wants to have him investigated over some "classified"
material, makes you wonder whether criminal charges won't be levied
against him.
Now...if those charges ever come into being...won't people go
"hmm...what a coincidence..."... :eyes:

15. O'Neill just appears to be a classic conservative,
from my (limited) perspective. But the * administration is so far from conservatism at this point that it is even scaring the conservatives!
