Hey, Greens:
Mrs. Robb is a Green who's going to vote Democratic in 2004; we came up with an idea last night, I don't know if it's a good one or not.

How about some sort of public campaign where Greens who are voting for Democrats in the general election could register, or sign a petition, or something, to make the point that they would rather be voting 3rd party, but are in it in 2004 to de-monkey the White House? Maybe something online, that would culminate in a full-page ad somewhere, something that would say that in a better situation, they'd be voting (to paraphrase Nader) their hopes rather than their fears?

Any merit in the idea?

1. I see what you're saying, but I'll tell you why I wouldn't.
I don't want to tell any party that they've got my vote, no matter what they do. They'll just ignore Greens and more left-leaning Democrats and move to the center.

2. Good point
...What if the "registry" was early, but publication of it was post-election?

4. its a good idea I thought of something like that
Edited on Tue Jan-13-04 12:06 PM by morgan2
where people wanting to vote for a third party could make it be known that officially they want to vote for that third party, but will vote for one of the major ones until that number of people who want to vote for the third party gets high enough at a later date. It's kind of like forcing instant run off voting over multiple elections.

5. I don't think so...
...but I do see where you're coming from.

I think the Greens are going to focus on the local elections in 2004. They really do need to build a stronger base, and maybe get some Greens elected to the Senate and House as well as to some state Governorships and state legislatures.

Whatever people do in the voting booth really should be their own business though. Talk the whys and wherefores after the elections if you want, but for now, let's focus on defeating Bush with such a strong majority that the Republicans will have to admit total defeat for their PNAC-type views and policies.

What I'd really like to see is Bush getting maybe 30% of the vote (his fundie-type and CEO-type friends) while the Democratic candidate gets 65% and the Greens take the other 5%. Think we can do that?

You know they are preventing us from flying I guess.

8. Well, she hasn't had any problems.
And she flies a lot. She might get more than her share of secondary searches, but we both think that's because she's something of a hottie -- more than her being a Green. :)

9. Kucinich or someone in his campaign sent a letter to the IOwa green party
Big K was asking for the Greens of Iowa to consider endorsing him in the upcoming caucuses, which I personally think would be a good idea. His positions are very similar to most greens and his letter was very nice and encouraging. I hope many consider it, I would love to see him show well next monday

10. Green platform allows for dual party membership
Not sure if the Dems do though.

I think it would be nice to have an overlap are for those Greens who do support Dems. They could have a donkey icon with a sunflower pinned to its straw boater as an official symbol of the dual support or what have you.

Not sure that it's necessary to take out full page ads, though. I'd hate to see my primary party, the Greens, get pulled apart over that. But there is no reason why Greens can't talk to other Greens about their voting strategy. That's what a lot of us are doing on the green lists I am on.

~Jen, a Green for Kucinich.. but she lives in a caucus state instead of a primary one, so her support amounts mostly to prayers and finger-crossing.
