Could BUSH sink any lower?? Unbelievable
Edited on Tue Jul-29-03 10:54 PM by Mari333
EarthRights International

President Bush has issued an Executive Order, so far completely unreported, that purports to grant broad legal immunity to oil companies operating in Iraq. The Order is, on its face, outrageous, and should be investigated.

Executive Order 13303, issued on May 22, 2003, claims to be essential to Iraqi reconstruction efforts. A cursory reading of the Order indicates that its real purpose is to protect oil companies by giving virtual impunity for any activities undertaken relating to Iraqi oil.

This Order, with broad language that seems to sweep aside federal statutes, including the Alien Tort Claims Act, has received no public attention. It has been brought to light by a researcher with the Sustainable Energy and Environment Network (SEEN).

Under this Order, an oil company complicit in human rights violations, or one that causes environmental damage, would be immune from lawsuits. The language of the Executive Order is so broad that it might as well have been written by lawyers for Halliburton, ExxonMobil and ChevronTexaco. <snip>

13. Right
Exactly right. He will go lower because every time that someone asks the question 'Can he sink any lower?', he always does. So please, for the love of all that is good, don't ask it anymore. ;)

7. I guess the extreme
right has forgotten all their screaming when an elected President issued executive orders, none of which were as blatant as this. This is nothing short of criminal, it IS all about oil!

12. reading this one...it's shocking that this has not been reported.
"I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, find that the threat of attachment or other judicial process against the Development Fund for Iraq, Iraqi petroleum and petroleum products, and interests therein, and proceeds, obligations, or any financial instruments of any nature whatsoever arising from or related to the sale or marketing thereof, and interests therein, obstructs the orderly reconstruction of Iraq, the restoration and maintenance of peace and security in the country, and the development of political, administrative, and economic institutions in Iraq. This situation constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States and I hereby declare a national emergency to deal with that threat."

so, the possibility that oil companies might get prosecuted for human rights abuses (or any other breach of the law) in iraq is a national emergency?

this is incredible. once again i am speechless at these incredible abuses of power that seem to go on and on...

You wrote>>so broad that it might as well have been written by lawyers for Halliburton, ExxonMobil and ChevronTexaco.<<<<

It only probably seems that way since it only probably WAS written by their lawyers.

It's probably even in the Cheney Energy Meeting minutes where they first discussed the need for it if they went into Iraq after it was sacked as planned by PNAC.

my guess, but I doubt anyone will disagree with this hunch...

10. pretty depressing
After gutting our country's bill of rights, this cheap-labor pro-corporation cabal is still hungry, and is now going after our country's laws.

And 50% of the country want to vote for * next year. I really don't get it.

15. Unless one of the post 9/11 laws
like the Patriot Act gives the President authority to grant this kind of immunity, it isn't legal.

16. Unocal will be thrilled to get that news!
they should send you a thank you. Oh wait, they probably wrote the law themselves.

We now have corporations making laws. Isn't that proof that they've taken over our government. Isn't that the defining moment?
