A shining new example of conservatives' stupidity:
The current headline on drudge:

GORE TO WARN OF 'GLOBAL WARMING' ON NEW YORK CITY'S COLDEST DAY IN DECADES!

Chuckle, chuckle, what irony...

They are beyond stupid.

That the melting of the polar icecaps could result in COLDER temperatures for a while as the oceans are flooded with that icy water.

Besides, it shows the same pattern of ""thinking"" (double quotes just weren't enough, have to use quadruple) they display when they say "Evolution? What evolution? I don't see apes turning into humans now!".

2. I was just arguing about that with some cons here at work.
Funny thing is, it's not our position that's changed. It's theirs.

First it was, "Global warming isn't happening."
Then, "Global warming might be happening, but it's natural."
Now, "Global warming is happening, and it's probably natural."

5. Actually, our position has changed...
In school, just thrity years ago, my teachers used Paul Erlich's theories to teach that humans and human pollution was causing Global Cooling and leading us into another Ice Age.

So apparently, thirty years later, we have overcorrected and have plunged ourselves into Global Warming.

Or so the theory goes.

6. They are quicker and more self-conflicted
than that. They long ago said global warming would be a boon- a tropical paradise. Someone is feeding them a lot of bad pablum, but what worries me is that the ones originating the happythink know perfectly well what would happen.

I suspect even the grinning optimists know too it would be a road warrior bloodbath at least if the world walked off a cliff their way-and that makes them secretly happy too. Yet the originators see gold in pushing a disaster they don't want to sacrifice to avoid, don't believe in trying to. They want to distract us from changing the world(politically and economically) until it becomes a disaster that makes us further dependent on the manipulators.

Some of the people on top are short sighted and stupid. The others are not, but have no faith in humanity because they are slime that sees themselves as the elite, and must keep us from disposing of their influence- for our own good(but that is always secondary, conditional and of little real concern).

7. I don't buy any of the 'end of the world' garbage
To me it is just like the 'economic crash' industry.

Go through any used book store and you will be able to find books with the titles, "The Coming Crash in the 1980s," "1990- The Year Wall Street Crumbled," "The Economic Depression of the 1990s," "The How YRK Will Crash The Stock Market," "2005- The Year of The NextGreat Depression."

There is a BIG industry in projecting doom and gloom.

And how is any scientist going to get a federal grant to prove that Global Warming is 90 percent hype?

11. Global warming is not "end of the world" garbage.
Scientists in every country on the earth have used scientific methods to prove the earth is indeed warming (overall, not just in puny little New England, USA) at an increasing rate. The deep ocean waters in the Atlantic have risen by a few degrees, the major glaciers in Europe and China are melting, he polar cap in the North is breaking up and Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf is shrinking. Just a few demonstrable facts.

I wouldn't invest in any beachfront property if you have the change.

13. Greenhouse Gases and Global Warming
the right has employed scientists to disprove the effects of Global Warming and Greenhouse Gases but unfortunately these 'scientists of the right' present bunk. It is completely political and designed to protect big oil and the automakers, as well as the industries that pollute. Of course, these are big Republican donors who have representatives in Bush's cabinet and the EPA.

Yup, there's a lot of doom and gloom, but amazingly, doom and gloom theories regarding the environment are more easily proven than disproven.

21. New England is having record cold, but the rest of the country
is NOT. In fact, in Nashville, we haven't had ANY snow so far this winter, and temperatures dropped into the 20's for maybe five days - NOT a typical Nashville winter. Most of the south hasn't had a single freeze warning since 2002.

Yesterday the high temp was 56. The decrease in temperature in New England is caused by glaciers breaking away from the polar ice caps and melting into the Atlantic, therefore dropping the overall temp of the ocean. This is a temporary condition CAUSED by increased temps in the rest of the world. As more polar ice melts, temps on the coasts will fluctuate in order to adapt. This is why the upper west coast and upper east coast has has such freakishly cold and snowy weather.

It's not "the end of the world," but it's not good news by any means.

27. Record high here
January in Alberta is supposed to be freeze your [insert politically uncorrect appendage here]s off weather.

People are wandering around in shirtsleeves and shorts. Granted they do that in 40 below weather, but LOTS of people are wandering around in shirtsleeves and shorts and failing to look dazed and confused.

My parka has cobwebs on it. When I first moved here it was never far from reach, even in summer.

In Alabama we usually get some mild days, but we've had a streak of 60 degrees for days that just ain't right in January. My flower bulbs are coming up! And it really stinks when the azaelas start to bloom and get zapped by the inevitable ice storm in early March.

Record breaking temps in both directions is certainly a sign that there is major destabilization going on in our climate no?

23. large climate fluctuations exist in recorded history
Less than 1000 years ago the Vikings had working farms on the southwest coast of Greenland. They struggled, to be sure, because the climate was harsh - but it wasn't so harsh that they could not farm there. Anyone think that would work now? Climate change - even dramatic change - is nothing new. It was happening before industrialization; heck, it was happening back when Og the caveman was chasing his supper with a stick and a rock. It will be happening after we are long gone regardless of what happens to the Kyoto treaty or any other such measures.

34. Which Universe was that again?
You say:

"And how is any scientist going to get a federal grant to prove that Global Warming is 90 percent hype?"

I'd think the most direct way would be to say, "Mr. Cheney, sir. I can prove that global warming is 90 percent hype." That should be good for a couple mil in a nanosecond.

If you didn't like Cheney, you'd probably be hard-pressed to find more than 30 or 40 top level people who'd like to fund your research.

Did you really mean what you said?

Edited on Thu Jan-15-04 10:33 AM by Military Brat
My first thought about the comment was, "What an idiot. Doesn't he realize that bizarre weather fluctuations are a direct result of global warming?"

Not to worry. Gore will use the current weather as an example of why global warming is such a threat to the planet. Or, to make it more palatable to Repubs, why it's such a threat to the United States. Hmm, why it's such a threat to red states.

Edit: (changed a word)

12. Global warming means violent weather and more of it.
Because when you have higher mean temperatures, you have higher temperature differences, meaning you have bigger pressure differences in the atmosphere, meaning more aggressive and numerous storm patterns. Yes, this means the frigid weather we've been getting up here in New England.

18. It wasn't a headline - it's just a consequence.
Of global warming, that is. Unless Earth's atmosphere was being heated uniformly - and it's not - rising temperatures lead to more violent weather patterns. Ever wonder why weather in recent years has been so screwy? Don't wonder.

25. And here in Indiana, we're having one of the WARMEST winters...
...in recent memory. No shit, only 2 days with temps below 10 degrees, one night when it got below zero, and I had my windows open at night for 3 days in December.

That's kind of Limbaugh-ian, isn't it? Tell everyone about global warming and then laugh about how cold it got the night before. Just like a good ditto-head, Drudge thinks Global Warming is about birdbaths freezing over, not jungles being 115 degrees where they used to hgit maybe 98.

26. These assholes never think long term.
For them, it's "So what? I don't care if it gets tens of degrees warmer over the next century- I'll be DEAD by then! And I like warmer weather....I could use a few more 't-shirt' days in the fall and winter!"

Seriously, that's how most freepers shrug off global warming. And then when weather like this comes along on the East and West coasts, it seems to confirm their biases....idiots. Actually, it confirms what un-bought scientists have been saying for decades. If they would only OPEN THEIR MINDS....

If he does I hope is 4 million dollar house is on stilts so he can get some resale value out of it.

The truth is some people cannot see be on their nose and see the forest from the trees.

Besides the city of Vince, the one with all of the canals goes under water on a weekly basis now.

We all know that the climate on this world changes. One of the nice things about living in a dynamic environment is that things do change. The consideration here is do we need to help it along at a faster pace then we can react to.
