I encountered a Repukelican at the Zoo today.....
At the Seattle Zoo there is a big display showing the rise in human population with a counter adding about 3 people per second. Another counter shows wild acreage left with an acre or two per second being lost. There was a mad looking man with his family pacing back and forth in front of the display ranting and raging and I noticed that his family was looking around all embarassed and agreeing with him as if to shut him up. I caught what he was saying and he was going on and on, "They only add the people being born! they aren't subtracting the people who die!! blah blah....Its Lies!!" He was fucking fuming mad at this damn toteboard. I felt so damned sorry for his kids. They were obviously not enjoying the spotlight he was focusing on them. I explained to my nephew that population trends are realised by finding the difference between how many people are born each year and how many people die; not by merely adding up the newly born each year. The Repooplican apparently heard me and stormed off dragging his wife and kids in tow, still ranting. Only a repuke could spoil his kids day at the zoo. I assume he gets his "Information" about population trends from radio talkshows

7. Which leads to the question...
So when do you think the bush admin will start saying that the reason we went to war was for the environmental concern of increased global population???

16. evolutionary anachronism
I think a certain divide in behavior helps species broadly respond to a wide variety of crisi csituations so that a good portion will survive one way or the other. Some are wired for fight, others flight. Some, especially mothers, are wired for nurturing and self-sacrifice. others are unscrupulous selfish bastards who insure their own survival with zero empathy for the suffering of others. And on and on.

Unfortunately, many people who are not criminally insane are badly wired for the present and future of intelligent, social humanity and long for the jungle, for the fears and hates that buzz their wires. People longing for the future of peace, cooperation, prosperity and adbvanced intellectual progress can share the dysfunctional mood in the stress of competing, warring modes of behavior.

And we ALL share primitive instincts that cause more harm than good in a civilized world- such as the automatic onset of anger when suddenly irritated or threatened. We need to survive and deal with our unadapted natures until either we have learned the skills or rewired the human psyche.

No wonder they see visions of Armageddon. Their brute instincts tell them the jig is up and their behavior has no place if the future progresses. Despair, spite, investing all in the most reactionarty dominance fantasies. The greater danger though is the mass of decent peaceful folk who think they have arrived- with little respect for history or progress making them easy prey for the terrible will of those "above".

Apes are intelligent and gentle creatures. Most of us should aspire just to be ape like.

4. I wonder why he cared?
As a Cheap Labor Conservative (CLC) the more hungry, poor people that are added to the world the better off he will be.

Oh wait I get it. The real CLC'ers downplay the population problem so that nothing gets done about it. He is one of the camp-followers who actually BELIEVES their press releases. Gotcha

14. How true...
it is, that the poor family had to be embarrased in such a way.

I would suppose the next stop would be the Monkey House so he could ask the primate in charge, how he should rationalize the next big event in his life.

Fools seem to have the biggest mouths, even though they have little to offer.

15. Wow Impressive
That you knew the man's politics.
I am sick of the word republican replacing stupid, dumb etc..
Republicans believe their way is the best way to resolve issues
Democrats believe their way is the best way to resolve issues
The lack of decency, respect is universal and not political

18. Probably he assumed
Because denying propblems caused by over-population tends to be a right-wing trait rather than left-wing. Please not the "tends to be." And I agree that word slike 'freeper' have creeped (Ha!) from their original meaning to mean 'fool' in general.

26. Respect is earned
Stealing an election, killing people, overturning my rights, declaring me a terrorist because I disagree with war, redacting scientific research showing global warming, lying to the people to start a war, enabling corporations to pillage California, blaming the effects of the pillaging on the governor of California, screwing those that served their country, destroying our educational system, burdening future generations with crushing debt, none of this does anything to earn my respect.

Did the display explain the methodology? Or did it simply read "number of people added" or some such?

23. Let's do the math
niceypoo said the clock shows that the population is increasing by about 3 people per second. According to the CIA World Factbook, the population of the world in June of 2002 was about 6,233,821,945 people and the growth rate was estimated at 1.23% per year. 1.23% of 6,233,821,945 is about 76,676,009. If you divide 76,676,009 by the number of seconds in a year (365 x 24 x 60 x 60) you get 2.43 people per second. My guess is that the clock is fairly accurate.
