I've figured out how the rich will evade the coming draft
Current law stipulates that draft defermits for college students will only be for the current semester, or school year if you are a senior. Of course, that can be changed or modified at a moments notice. How will the rich frat boys evade the military draft this time? Sure, many will cash in their social and political connections to get defermits from local draft boards, and some will take extended vacations to Switzerland. Still, I believe the Bush Administration will get Congress to pass a law that allows college students who are business majors to defer service for 4 years. MBA students would also be exempted, as would any young man (this Administration won't dare offend the fundie wackos by drafting women)who is either an employer (which won't be a whole lot of people) OR any young man in an entry level business or corporate positon. In defense of all this, Team Bush will give us a bunch of jibberish about how these are the "job creators that make our economy work", and that the war's success "depends on the US having a strong class of young business people and entrepreneurs." Many working people will believe this nonsense, even as they and their children are packed up and sent off to fight in the next imperial war of conquest.

1. You are for Clark and
you believe this?

When he is president, no such thing will happen.

2. I'm assuming that Bush is elected
Of course, if he is not president in 2005, I don't see a draft.

4. Please don't assume
that Bush is (s)elected.

Not that I'm into all that stuff, but I still believe in self-fulfilling prophecies.

Clark in 2004!

3. Maybe.
More likely, they will simply allow themselves to be drafted, then have Daddy pull some strings to get them cushy state-side postings.

6. It happened in WWII--the "Good" war.
My mother worked at Ellington Field near Houston. Lots of air cadets were trained in Texas, due to our relatively mild winters & generally flat topography.

Several sons of prominent Houston families were stationed there in administrative positions. Fulfilling a non-combat role in the service is not shameful. At least in the days before outsourcing (to Halliburton) those who did not go into harm's way did useful support work.

But everybody knew that the ones who didn't even have to inconvenience themselves by leaving home had pulled some serious strings. It can happen again.

7. I actually want to see a draft cause I want to see if the
those flag-waving Repugs who are Chickenhawks will be singing a different tune if they're butt or their kid's butts are on the line to be in Iraq or wherever else the Bush war machine takes us.

And I think even if a Dem is elected, we may still see a draft since AWOL has managed to so decimate our military. I'm betting there's going to be mass retirements from the Guard/Reserve once the stop losses are lifted. And I'm betting there's a lot of active military who are going to say their life is worth more than a $10,000 reenlistment bonus.
