1. Don't shoot the messenger.
If those are Zogby's results it's a legit news item. Most people take Zogby seriously.

3. Don't shoot the Messenger?
Well as a journalist who has actually been shot, I fully understand that my profession is littered with wordsmiths and conveyors of information who present their 'objective' news so it fits their own political and moral agendas.

I just can't stand how blatant Drudge is... The amount of power he has is frightening.

Note he follows it with a re-elect Gore movement piece - I don't think Al has a chance in hell and Drudge knows that.

4. Maybe if some if these complacent poll taking idiots...
.. would get off their ass and get involved, then maybe the country wouldn't be hijacked again.

Who knows? They probably just want to sit around and bitch!

That's one good thing about Repukes, at least they are organized. Maybe there's something to this "working from the same script" thing that dittoheads are so famous for!

Screw party diversity! The 'Pukes are on to something.

6. Agreed, Zogby's Polls are Questionable at best...
I have signed up on their website to be polled and after the first 3 polls (onced I was pegged as a liberal Democrat) I haven't heard from them since. I never really believed half the crap thew spewed out anyway, but this really makes me wonder.

Also, they are based (and from) near my hometown in Utica, NY - TOTAL FREEPER-VILLE!! I can't imagine that their staff is completely unbiased. Finding a liberal, or even a democrat in that area is like finding a needle in a haystack.

26. I don't know much about the politics of Utica,
but I love the place. Was just there last weekend. The Saranac brewery is a wonderful place. It might be even better than my hometown of Syracuse :)

7. Zogby
is well respected. Just because he is delivering news that our own people don't think they can win doesn't mean he is 'on their side.'

I think this fits well with the poll that indicated 60% of people who call themselves Democrats didn't know who the Democratic nominees were. This just means that Kerry, Dean, Gephardt, et al need to gear things up, make some front pages in the local news across the nation.

As a Dean supporter, this tells me that I'm not talking about Dean enough to my friends and family and THEY aren't doing the same. Don't be upset at Zogby, thank him for getting this information to us in time to correct the perception of the Democrats.

25. A sign
Maybe instead of dismissing these polls as garbage we should undertand how much work we have ahead of us. It's one think to hang out on DU and pat ourselves on our backs about how much more informed we are, but if the rest of the country is still in the dark, maybe we should get off our asses and do something about it.

- write a letter to the editor
- attend candidate forums, even for local office, and ask them tough questions
- go down to the democratic party headquarters in your city or county and volunteer
- volunteer for a campaign

If we satisfy ourselves with our own "investigations" and prognostications (no matter how correct), but fail to bring the message beyond the like-minded, nothing will change. Dismmiss the polls at your own peril.

9. What worries me at this time is the trend.
I agree with Luminous X that the data is a good wake-up call for Dems. But the worrisome trend is that 56% thought that Bush would win 4 months ago, and now 69% believe that. That's a real problem.

16. Terrific article, and MANDATORY reading!!! Thanks, lcordero...
Great article -- says it all, including:

"...numerous Zogby Polls for various special interests have relied on creative phrasing to give the impression of wide public support for the view that the given client is promoting..."

Let us be very wary of any polls!

13. I prefer to look at it
this way; the poll does not lull Democrats into complacency. If Zogby would've come out with the opposite results too many on the Left will stay home 11/04 thinking we've got the election sewn up. But this way 'ol Zogby has created a sense of urgency among us, which hopefully translates into a larger voter turnout.

19. 1991 all over again
Are we going to buy this crap or move forward with getting Bush out of the White House.

I'm sure at this time back in 1991, when a host of nobody dems were looking to run against Bush Sr, similiar type of numbers were out there. People were waving their flags of patriotism and loving Bush Sr for making them so proud to be americans.

Who would have thought any democratic, especially a nobody governor out of a small southern state, could beat Bush Sr.

23. This is good!
It's good that we know what we are up against so we can fight harder.

Also, remember that Bush* is getting all this free press right now (especially with the Iraq war) and the dem candidates are still competing with each other for the nomination. So, to the "average" person, they hear Bush*, Bush*, other, other, other, other, other, other, other, other, other.

Its still early, IMO, and there's lots of time to eat into his lead and support our candidate. As the primaries progress and the field is narrowed to the top 2 or 3 (or even just the top 1), this will start to change.

24. 41% 'unfamiliar' with Kerry; 61% unfamiliar with Dean. What does
that tell us?? Hell, 18% didn't know who Lieberman is....

People aren't paying attention yet, despite the shape the country is in. So, why should we worry about what THEY think bush's chances are in 2004???

27. Zogby is a DEMOCRAT
He can't stand Bush, so i highly doubt that his polls favor republicans, caribmon. so what if you're a former journalist? most journalists acknowledge that james zogby is an excellent pollster.
