Let us tell our democratic congressfolks to boo Bush tomorrow--
I just received this email from a friend who suggests we send it to our congressional reps telling them to show their disgust for Bush's bullshit!:

I'm running this message and a longer version in as many papers as possible.
If any of you are interested you might forward this message, or one similar,
to members of Congress. I don't know if they'll respond, but Congress is so
divisive right now they might eek our some courage. We can't rely on Pelosi or
Daschle for leadership.... they're despicable cowards.

"On January 20th at the State of the Union, you Democrats in Congress must
show the world your courage. Don't stand when Bush enters. Don't applaud.
Boo loud and long and keep booing 'til it's over. Bush duped you into
unnecessary war and tarnished your reputations forever. He duped you to grant him
unprecedented power to thwart Constitutional balance. He calls you unpatriotic.
He duped you in 2002 and now controls Congress. He duped you to leave every
child behind and infringe on American's rights. Police were deployed to
depose you from Chambers. He made fools of you all and imperiled a world that
should NEVER see you applaud him. Shout out like Gore, Kennedy, Conyers, Rangel,
Lee and patriots nationwide. If the Brits can do it to Blair, then you must
do it to Bush. If you don't, you're not just duped, you're just dupes!!"

1. I posted a thread like this about the SOTU last year
My theory was if the Dems didn't stand and applaud, Bush would blow a gasget on National TV and expose himself for the dangeroulsy unbalanced person he is.

3. i think soft "golf applause" would be better
YOu don't want 'em to look like bad sports. Maybe soft applause with eye rolling.

5. Or staying seated, instead of
jumping up as if to say, "The sophomores stand and fight!"

4. Yeah, well, it would backfire
Just give the wingers something else to scream about. A distraction. What's needed is something dignified that is EXPLICITLY linked to the fact that he lied in his last one. Just refusing to applaud during or after, maybe? You've got to communicate "we respect the office" while disrespecting the man. But I think unless you can get out the message of precisely what you're doing and why, it just makes you look adolescent and ill-mannered. It has to convey a message other than "We think Bush stinks! Nya nya!"

Just my opinion of course.

6. I agree that it would backfire.
Sitting quietly and not applauding would be the best approach.

12. You are right. The republican party would love this.
In fact, I expect the RNC to falsely claim that democrats showed Bush a complete lack of respect. Senator Clinton will be the primary target of the lies, but Kerry, Edwards, Lieberman, Gephardt, Kennedy, Daschle and others will be potential targets of the lies also.

7. When the republicans had President Clinton on the ropes of impeachment...

and the republicans were firmly in control...still, everyone in the body stood and applauded the President, republicans and democrats alike…it’s tradition, protocol and the polite thing to do…even if you despise that person, one doesn’t display it (until after the speech and then they come out like wolves.)

20. Nope.
"...everyone in the body stood and applauded the President, republicans and democrats alike…"

Got to correct you there. Most republicans did not stand and applause. They looked very stupid and childish, imo.

8. How about a balanced, dignified approach?
Stand up and applaud for the folks fighting overseas.

Sit quietly and clap gingerly for Rove's calculated PR-only initiatives, like Leave No Clear Skies Behind or Prescription Drug-Company Coverage or how we got Saddam. The very act of clapping so belatedly should signify the feeling that only the concept deserves merit while BushCo's actions on same deserve no such thing.

Sit quietly and politely not clap for all of the brazen cable whore propaganda like how the economy is powering ahead and how we're all safer from terrorism, etc, etc, etc.

And don't feel bad about it. The Repubs used to sit defiantly against much of Clinton's SOTU.

10. I'.d rather see them all attend the prayer vigil
and march for families of the deceased souldiers. That in it self would speak volumes. There absence would mean something!

It'd bring attention the candlelight vigil. I'd love to see some republican politician try to call *that* unpatriotic or unworthy. Just miss the fucking SOTU completely.

11. OK, How About This
I don't mind if they stand and give light applause as he enters, but I expect them to sit right down and not make another peep until he is done, and not much of one then.

13. what better way to show non support for a fascist then to refuse to
applaud or acknowledge , stand or show any respect at all? Since it is "tradition" perhaps the best statement in support of the AMERICAN PEOPLE, would be to give tradition the finger.

Now that would take some courage (of convictions)

15. I sent this to Boxer, Feinstein and the dem reps in congress --
I suggested that at the very least they could sit on their hands. I hope others send the democratic legislators similar suggestions. Remind that we're watching them.

Moon him.

(Seriously, boos might be a little much. But there's nothing written that says they HAVE to applaud every breath the sumbitch takes!)

18. Complete and utter silence from the Dem side would be most effective.
No standing, no clapping, no nothing.

This would be the total high-class, win-win way to go.

Jeering and booing is tempting, but ultimately makes the booer look stupid.

Now, this said, naturally the Dems will stand and politely applaud the fraudulent murdering dictator, like good little dupes.

19. I don't agree with that.
Our congressmen and women should be above all that. If they want to sit on their hands and not applause, that is fine. But I remember when Clinton was ignored by the right right after the Monica thing broke and the repukes were treating him like he was a leper. It was all so childish. It shouldn't start with our guys booing. Save that for the protestors.
