I'm fed up.
Just got a call from my better half. She's on her way to Illinois from Atlanta, stopping over in Kentucky. While asleep, some redneck asshole keyed her car deeply, apparently in response to her "Bush Lied, People Died" sign.

I'm just about sick of this country.

I'm sick of bible-thumping ignorants that get all their info from TV and think that Bush is some sort of hero.

I'm sick of wannabee-macho pricks with penis issues driving their big, slow SUVs and listening to the non-stop hate spewing from their AM radios.

I'm sick of feeling like my intelligence is a liability and that I'd be happier if I was a stupid sheep following the lemmings off the cliff.

I'm sick of a media that refuses to air important stories, and instead floods the airwaves with Laci Peterson, Kobe Bryant, and the Oscars.

I'm sick of being surrounded by war-mongering assholes that believe might makes right.

I'm sick of being treated like a second-class citizen because I realize there is no god and that religion is evil.

I'm sick of watching our law enforcement neglect its duty to protect in order to punish people for ingesting a substance or providing that substance to other people.

I'm sick of the direction this country is going. I'm sick of the jingoism. I'm sick of the holy-rollers. I'm sick of the whole goddamned thing.

Can someone please help me regain my faith in the USA? Can someone please let me know that I'm not the only pot-smoking, peace-loving, intelligently logical atheist left!

Please!

1. Okay, part of the problem is that you can't put a sticker on
your car that offends redneck assholes and not expect a redneck asshole to act like a redneck asshole. What was she thinking . . . redneck assholes would wash her car for her? Come on. That's just naive.

2. Keying
I had a "Vote Democratic" sticker and also got keyed. One DUer had an excellent solution. He went to a sign company and got a sheet of magnetic material. Puts his stickers on that then on his car. When he parks his car he is able to take the stickers off and put them in his trunk. Pretty sad when one has to resort to this.

3. Ever thought of expatriation?
My SO and I are saving up to move to canada. We're already looking at online job prospects - maybe I'll even start a post in the GD forum to see if someone will mail them to us :-) I've given up on this country. I have a sick horrid feeling that it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better, and every day that I go to work I pay to help it along. that kills me.

Not to be a nationalist or anything, but I was led to believe this country stood for a lot more than this bunch petty, self-interested, self-absorbed intolerants bent on getting whatever they can for themselves while they say FUCK everybody else!

6. I'm With You
I am disgusted, demoralized, shocked, and ANGRY about the state of our country. I find myself resentful that I am living in this absurd time. Idiots everywhere.

There are millions of us who feel the same way.

The only thing that keeps me going is the hope that sanity and justice will somehow prevail, that the arrogance and sheer stupidity of the Republican party will bring irreparable damage to its cause.

The Bush/GOP forces are shooting themselves in the ass on a daily basis. Stay tuned

Don't know where you rent your cars, but the lessee is responsible for damage to the rental car.

7. I don't think bumper stickers tend to help much
at least kinds like that, which only a minority of even democrats would take kindly to.

Any bumper stickers look tackey to me, unless it's an old car that a kid drives or something. I've put pro-candidate stickers taped to the inside of my rear windshield during election season, and I plan to put my Edwards one on after christmas.

Not that it's ok for anyone to vandalise her car, but she or he should know better. It wouldn't be wise to have a sticker like that in even Cambridge or Frisco, nevermind Kentuckey.

12. File a report with local police and call local media
The odds of the perpetrator being caught are slim, but that way there is an offical record of the incident. Also, if the local corporate media ignores you, sound out alternative newspapers in the city. Every city has at least one, and with the internet you can instantly have an international audience.

My car had a sticker that said "Don't blame me: I voted for Tony Sanchez"m and I received no complaints, but Rick Perry is not terribly popular here in Austin, and even in the rest of Texas his poll numbers are starting to flag.

My new sticker will say: Support the Troops, Don't Vote for Politicians Who Cut Veterans Benefits.

16. Something to remember
When I was on the road I used to listen to NPR almost all day long. I remember a ttime when the NPR news came on and talked about how the Clinton Administration had signed agreements with N. Korea, talks with Israel and palestine were beginnig to bear fruit, employment was up, the gdp was up. That was one good feeling afternoon.

I drove around all day thinking "Is this a great country or what!" It was a great feeling.

I WANT THAT FEELING BACK! No neocon, cheap labor conservative, "I've got mine-screw you", Republican is going to stop me from getting it back.

That's why I came to DU.

This is as far out as I like to go.

38. Pray for me. I live in Tucker
but, have to tell you, more and more Democratic signs showing up. I was amazed at the number of Gore signs and War is Not the Answer signs in our neighborhood. I did almost give this elderly gentleman, who was campaigning for Sunny whoever who ran against Cynthia the time before last, a heart attack. He knocked on my door, started his rampage against Cynthia (didn't even mention his candidate) and ended with a rant against abortion. Yes, I almost killed that poor guy. He told me I didn't "belong around here". Guess I'll have to move to Midtown.

18. one word: "canada"
It will not change. If you stay, you must cloaque like a klingon... no bumper stickers, no visible piercings or tatoos... short hair and business smart clothes nobody will touch you, even if you're stoned to the gills.

I felt like you did, and leaving america has been the most positive thing in my life... truly, all the frustration in your post is how i used to feel in the nazi states of repression... I spent today working outside near the ocean with people who are not violent and not afraid... i was invited for a coffee this evening by a neighbors house in the lovely twilight... we smoked a joint... it was sweet.

America is a very sick country, and you are healthy... best you find non-cancerous cells to bond with, as the malignancy america is not that.

Edited on Wed Jul-30-03 04:34 PM by HFishbine
Your post reeks of hopelessness. You were wronged and you won't feel better unless you do something that can counter the stupid action against your SO.

So do something. Turn this into a positive. Be a catalyst for change, even if it's only one mind you open. Here's my suggestion:

Write a letter to the editor of the local paper where this occured. Avoid paining the whole town with a broad brush, in fact, avoid any speculation about who did it, merely state that you suspect it was done because of the sentiment expressed on the sticker.

From there, go on to explain just what is meant by Bush lied, people died. Make the case and leave it at that. The rednecks who would just as happily keyed your car won't change their minds, but there may be one or two (or more) people in that town for whom your letter might serve as a catylist for a little thinking.

20. Not sure I can help you
Because your rant about summed it up for me. I don't put stickers on my car for that reason among others. I have seen stickers that offended me greatly, however, I would NEVER think of doing anything to one's car because of it. No respect for others is what it amounts too. Sickening! Don't you wish you could just once catch one of these assholes in the act? Cowards do this when no one is looking!

25. You're OK
I feel much the same. I think the problem is that Americans are disengaged, and have not thought much about the dangers Bush represents. My feeling is that you should try to do everything you can to put Bush out in 2004 (his election is not a foregone conclusion), come up with some time and $ for the Party if you can, and then maybe consider leaving the US if the Dems fail. That is what I am going to do. I looked at Italy this Spring, and will check out Vancouver this September. In Italy not having to look at Bush's ugly face and hear his ugly talk was heaven.
