You heard it here. PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH IS A RELIGIOUS BIGOT PIECE OF SHIT AND A FUCKING WHORE TO BOOT.

I'm going to bed and I'm not breathing word one of this to Mrs. V. Give her one more night of rest before she and I begin working with all our free time to defeat Bush this November.

NO, YOU BIGOTS, YOU MAY NOT AMEND THE CONSTITUTION TO INCLUDE THE DENIAL OF CIVIL RIGHTS!! HOW FUCKING STUPID ARE YOU?!

28. He said:
"I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. That statute protects marriage under federal law as the union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states.

"Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.

"The outcome of this debate is important, and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight."

I suppose it's not the first time a president has lent his support to codified civil rights denial in a SOTU speech, but this is the first time (AFAIK) that it's hit me right in the gut. This loser is SO gone.

I really can't speak right now. I didn't watch it, because I don't have cable and none of the Australian free to air channels were broadcasting it. But many thanks to Sappho for posting his words.

42. It's amazing.
Bush doesn't have the guts to say "no gay marriage" himself. That doesn't surprise me at all.

But by saying what he said in the SOTU, he implies CLINTON said that. And Bush also demonstrates that he's willing to hide behind Clintons skirts on this issue too.

What a ball-less snake livered wonder.

Edited on Tue Jan-20-04 10:14 PM by Newsjock
Is it accurate to characterize this as the first time that anti-gay language has ever been included in a SOTU?

Me? I'm about ready to hang it up and declare that I can no longer be an impartial journalist. I probably won't go make a dramatic resignation back at work tonight (I'm poor), but I don't see how I can do the "media whore" job that's demanded of me anymore -- or even how I can do a traditional journalist's job and somehow represent Bush's views with any degree of balance.

This arrogrant f***wad must go. And if he does not, I pray that some country (Canada?) will open its doors to gay people who no longer feel safe in the USA.

If he wants war the fucker will get a war. But I will not lay down and let my constitition be amended to take away my rights? I will not leave for Canada quite yet. But if the constitution is amended I will leave.

It is so funny that the constitution protects whatever religion a person "chooses" but not an orientation that I have been born with. At what point does a majority amend the constitution to take away religious choice for Jews, for Catholics, for the mentally ill, or the elderly? Not a slippery slope to step upon.

A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. 46. All people, straight or gay should be apalled at what is happening here.
Yet, I see posts here that show amazement at the direction Bush has indicated. Have you underestimated yor enemy???? All people of whatever sexual orientation should stand up against the assault on civil rights.

If you were not aware before, know it now, that this night is the beginning of a great battle. On what side will you make your stand and be counted???

the other way too. The thread called for all gays. Now I have put up threads for women only, and the men nicely said they were men when they answered. It's only polite. So I think to say you are straight first is important for the discussion when the thread was for gays.

I'm deeply offended by the speech, it does not matter my proclivity, rather my heart and sense of justice.

Sorry for being a priss... the judgement, evil and hate of that speech is still leeching out of my body... i think i'll take a bath.

but because we sincerely want you to know just because we're not gay does not mean we don't care deeply about protecting your rights. In other words, we want you to know that you're not alone, that we will not turn our backs on you just because we're not in the same position.

129. actually i thought it was kind of nice since
it seems that a lot of "straight" people don't give a shit whether or not gays can get married. saying that i'm straight and willing to fight for gay rights is sort of like the allied forces fighting to defend the jews during WWII. i mean, duh, not just like that, but the similarity is in the idea of people who don't really HAVE to fight for this issue coming together and fighting for it anyway.

for example, i have a christian friend who is somewhat of a bornagain. (although, yay, she hates * ) i'm not christian. but the fact that she'll defend me to other people on the basis of religion means a lot to me. :-D

i understand your point, i do think sometimes that people are afraid of doing things like joining gay/straight alliances because they don't want to "look gay." and i don't like that either. :)

thanks for the thought-provoking post!!

I agree with your analysis, Bertha. I imagine the rich gay Republicans are solely motivated by Bush's economic policies and don't give a shit about whether or not we can marry.

This may play to evangelicals, but no one else. Efforts to appeal to the bigotry of America alway fail. Witness the Pat Buchanan speech at the '92 convention. I knew Bush I would lose right then. Americans are NOT BIGOTS. Americans DO NOT believe in discrimination. Americans are open-minded, intelligent, forward-thinking people. DO NOT underestimate the integrity of the American people.

I hope that the gay community can put the anger that you feel right now (along with the rest of us) and use it constructively.

Guys, the gay community has some real clout. We generated millions of dollars in 1992 and helped elect Bill Clinton President. We can do it again in November. This is a wake up call, everyone. We now officially know who the enemy is...he defined it for us tonight.

With the recent news that they are facing being put under Sharia law after decades of equal rights and NO ONE GIVES A SHIT, it is clear that women remain the seond class citizens of the world.

Off topic, I am looking forward to the HBO movie "Iron Jawed Women", a true story about the women who were jailed an force-fed during the early suffregette movement. It'll be a nice reminder of where we have come from and how much we stand to lose.

look down on. If it isn't black people, then it's brown people, if it brown people, its gay people. They aren't truly confident in themselves unless they have defined most of the world as evil, perverted and deranged. Their power is to make people afraid or guilty. Well, I'm not either, nor am I going to be devastated, because I always expected this low level pandering to the religous nuts anyway. I'm just so fucking, goddamn, smoking pissed off, that any right wing so called christian who crosses my path in the next year better watch their ass carefully, because I am about to tear them a new one. I am not going to live in a theocracy. I am not going to let them burn the bill of rights or smear it with their religious shit. Maybe we should just trot out the Pink Triangles for everyone who supports freedom, and maybe we need to resurrect the Silence Equals Death mindset.

I lost too many of my friends to AIDS so many years ago to lay down and let this go by. I've disliked this regime from the get-go, but I am dammed if I am gonna let them do this while I sit quietly and mutter "It's a shame."

I can only hope that they find the Christian hell that they claim to fear.

I think there is an assumption that the only people who care are gay. Maybe if they see Pink Triangles everywhere they will figure out that not all straight folks are bigoted assholes who support this kind of oppression.

I wore one as I saw my friends dying with a "gay" disease that was ignored for too long, and I buried one with a dear friend who died before his time. I have no fear of wearing one again in support and solidarity.

I can only believe that it is right to continue fighting, either in memory of everyone lost to us or in order to protect everyone to come.

It took the tragedy of AIDS and the loss of those I loved to move me to actively work for equal rights for all. I had to sit with a man who'd lost the love of his life when he was barred from attending his partner's funeral. I made a vow that day not to sit down ever again on this issue. I can't let it go.

Frequently I post in anger or in outrage and never stop to consider that my words my hurt others with equally raw wounds. I am so very sorry.

Pax to you.

Not gay or lesibian (well, lesbians and I like the same things  ), but this is a goddamned disgrace.

I have no doubt the Imperials are only using this issue to push gays in everyone's face. Tom DeLay (or one of his stooges, I don't know as Pravda, naturally, ignored it) openly stated that he wanted to get rid of all the White Democratic Reps in Texas and make the Democratic face a dark one.

The Busheviks have been seperating working class Whites from the Democratic Party by pursuing such policies. Of course, the corollary is to also make the Democratic Face a Gay Face. This as political ploy, subtly convincing Whites (and they have been VERY successful), "look, all the Democrats do is help blacks and gays."

Not true, but since when has Goebbels v2.0, as an Amerikan Institution, ever worried about truthfulness for even one second??

Bottom line, I stand with the gays and lesbians on this issue. Also, in 20 years if the Imperial family isn't stopped, I will rush to your aid when the Freeper revive pogroms and I will help you escape to the Free World from the Amerikan Empire.

Let's hope it doesn' come to that.

Is that millions of Americans don't have healthcare or jobs, we are loosing the war in Iraq, our education system is failing, social security will be gone in the near future, and we have record budget deficits. Yet this president you seems to feel that despite all of this, preventing gay people from getting married is one of the most pressing issues of our time. It's apparent that this president does not have his priorities in order. But then again, I can't expect anything less from somebody who can't spell, define, or pronounce the word priority.

but I sympathize them. Bush just dealth the homosexual community a few new blows. I am really pissed about that.

Gays and Lesbians should be allowed the same rights as straight couples. Why can't he understand that? They're people too.

I'm going to support any candidate for President (or for any other seat for that matter) that supports the homosexual agenda and that acknowledges them as people too.

109. You Won't Know Outrage Until You Know Betrayal & Silence.
Edited on Tue Jan-20-04 11:49 PM by David Zephyr
And believe me, betrayal will come.

And when we behold betrayal by Democrats in State Legislatures around the country voting for Bush's Constitutional Amendment, then we will know outrage.

And when we behold the silence by our fellow straight Democrats --- even here at the DU by those who think erroneously that they adroitly avoid threads like these for fear of being identified with us --- then you will know true outrage.

And which is greater: betrayal by lawmakers who claim to be of "the people's party" or by so-called fair weather leftists who suddenly are silent and nowhere to be found?

116. Here is someone that supports gay rights and can beat Bush
General Clark's interview in The Advocate:

What are they saying?

They tell me that they want it fixed, and I agree. The armed forces are the last institution in America that discriminates against people. It ought to be the first that doesn’t. They ought to have the right to be who they are. They shouldn’t have to conceal their identities. You know, there are different models (that allow for gay people to serve openly)—the British have a model—and there is no impact on combat readiness. It’s a bogus issue.

I know your son was married recently. If your son had been born gay, would you want him to have the same rights that he enjoys today?

I would want him to have the right to have a stable relationship. But whether you call it marriage or not is up to the church or the synagogue or the mosque. And it’s up to the state legislatures. I think marriage is a term of art. It’s a term of usage. But the legal side of it is not: It’s not negotiable.

But about 40% of U.S. marriages every year happen without any religious participation.

I support whatever the state says. If the state of Massachusetts says we’re going to form a civil union but we’re going to call it marriage, then as far as I’m concerned, that’s marriage.

Lemme just say this:

On behalf of heterosexual people everywhere, I apologize for this bullshit. I apologize for the phobias and the stigmas, the violence, the hate, the injustice you have to suffer. I apologize for the way hatred against you is justified by outdated cant and dogma from a book that's been used as a club to suppress almost all "other" groups of humans since it was written. I apologize as human first, as an American second, and as friend third.

Please forgive those among us who realize that there is injustice going on, and will do what we can to stop it. I pledge solidarity.

Bush doesn't represent the best of straight America; he represents a systemized method of preventing humanity from progressing, and is merely the latest in a long, sad line of fools and tyrants. His proposals, thoughts, and policies are not OUR wishes for a better world, but sick, bloody lies.

I'm sorry for this.

We all have to take a stand. If the wingnuts see enough pink triangles out there maybe they'll realize that not all the world is intolerant or bigoted. Additionally, I do it in memory of all my Friends who died of AIDS when it was just a "gay" disease.

I'm just about at the point that I feel dislike for THEM for who they are. I'm fighting to keep from turning into someone who hates faux conservatives because of who they are. THAT scares me about this situation. I don't want to be anything like them.

186. Small odds?
People should accept reality on this one so the repubs don't blind side us on it.

Take a look at the number of states who have passed laws defining marriage. Apparently today you can add another to that list. All of these states are prime candidates to pass an amendment reflecting a state law they have already passed. From what I understand it only one more state would now be needed.

Take a look at who controls congress. The dems MAY be able to stop it in the senate - I don't know how many dems would be for or against it. This assumes, of course, they don't use one of the methods out of the 4 that allows amending of the constitution with out the national congress. They may have the states to do it.
