"Portland Protest the Protesters Night" at local Enron-named Ballpark!
Yep. Tomorrow, July 31 at the ball game at Portland's own PGE Baseball Park (PGE is owned by Enron, btw). PGE Park is also heavily subsidized by the City of Portland (taxpayer dollars). And this is what they are doing.

It's also Thirsty Thursday (cheap beer) which usually makes it a rather raucus crowd....... mixing beer and HATE and civil liberties suppression.....sounds like a real good time!

I found this post over at Portland Indymedia:

PGE Park Announces "Protest the Protesters" Promo for July 31, 2003 Baseball Game

PGE Park has publicized a "promotion" for the evening of July 31, 2003 that will encourage spectators to "protest the protestors." As I understand it, materials will be provided for the construction of signs protesting Portland area protestors. I intend to picket this ill-conceived event from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM and hope to be joined by as many others as possible.

Jennifer Gartz of PGE Park Promotions (xxx-xxx-xxxx) described the event to me by telephone as a "light-hearted" thing with no intention of denigrating protest as such. She noted that last year there was a "Protest" night, and this just gives it a different spin.

In view of routine attempts by the administration and the right wing to portray protests as unpatriotic and/or anti-American, however, I view this promotion as thoughtless at best. I don't know how widely PGE Park is advertising this promo. I first heard of it over public address at the Timbers soccer game on July 26 and was astonished. I assume it will be re-advertised in this manner at the Beavers game July 29 (tonight, as I write). My requests for cancellation were denied.

4. Please tell me this isn't for real. Please . . .
This is absolutely repugnant (no pun intended, but . . .).

I'd like to think that the fans would find it so, too, but I doubt it. Cheap beer wins above all else.

5. protest
I emailed the management and told them their Protest the Protesters night was unAmerican (that always ticks them off) and unpatriotic. Said it was their attempt to undermine free speech and stifle protest against the administration's policies.

It's a joke. It's intended to be funny and fun. Last year protest night, this year the opposite. Who cares?

Especially if they are progressive.
I would NOT go to a hate-filled event like this promises to be. And as far as this being a joke, I'm sure we'll all be laughing when they come to take you to Gitmo. This event sets a dangerous precedence, but you seem to be too muddled to see it.

I'm sure last year, the morons at Freerepublic said the exact same thing about protest night. You are over-reacting.

16. I didn't think of that Lars......I COULD go and protest the flag wavers...
You know the anti-protest protest people waving flags, spitting on peace protesters and sometimes running them over? Yeah......I could protest THOSE protesters!

I don't understand the indymedia folks.......they are going to protest OUTSIDE the stadium.

Hell......buy a $10 ticket.....get the sign materials from the ballpark and make some free signs!! and drink cold beer on a hot night. why stand outside the stadium?

10. Mixing sports and politics is disgusting.
Which is why I thought Toni Smith should have kept it in the locker room despite the fact I agreed with her stance on the war.

15. Let's PROTEST THE PROTESTING OF PROTESTORS!
That would demonstrate how dumb it is to protest against protesting.

17. The Indymedia folks are really creative.....some counter ideas........
**I dare say that I will be at the first and only ballgame of the season tomorrow night.....indeed I will. I particularly like No. 2's sign ideas......

1. i think a good idea would also be to infiltrate this Enron Park protest, especially if you plan on going to the game. make ridiculous signs that push even the limits of the sheep mentality. signs such as

"Who cares if theres a war, Survivor's on!"
"Ban freedom of speech!"
"Who cares about freedom, I'm gettin' drunk!"
"Give me Convenience, or Give me death!"
"I hate free speech!"

etc.
once people realize that you're making fun of them, i think that will take a lot of the wind out of their sails. i really think a serious counter protest would just give them more fodder. these morons are trying to be witty, and its our job to show them we will always win a battle of wits.

2. Come on, it's just a silly event anyway. No need to protest the protester protesters... that will confuse the journalists. Why not participate in their events??

Defend MY rights? No Thanks!

20. great stuff DagmarK!
Hope you will buy a ticket and "protest the protesters protesting protesters" from your seat. Bring your own signs, though - they're sure to run out of material. Bring your friends, too, and I look forward to your report on the event tonight!

I agree that it is a good idea to keep it witty. You're more likely to "score" that way, and less likely to get beaten up!
